Hey all I'm having to change my carb because I'm having uncertain problems with my carb , possable it is the ecu . So I'm having an su carb replacing it , but want to know if it's a simple set up and if you have had experiance converting one . I must add this is an injection model has any one done one?
( I have seen the conversion set up in the sticky page ) [/list]

the first question you have to ask yourself is do you intend to use the vehicle on road again? your proposing to replace a single point injection unit with an su carburettor which will not be able to to give you the required emission specs for your catalyst equipped car hence an mot failure you will also find you will have to convert back to old type distributor and coil not as straight forward as you would think reagards bob

Well the answer is yes , I use it daily on the road. I had no idear I'd have emmision problems , and to make matters worst my mot is in a week. Shocked iv seen many people convert there sj to su , my samurai has an inderpendent distributor , it's not on the ecu only the carb and sensors around the carb run off the ecu Confused

yes ive seen many sjs with su conversions but these as im aware are usualy originaly carb vehicles hence a simple carb swap your not proposing to swap a carb your taking off a single point injector unit which is ecu controlled ive no doubt your vehicle will run if an su is fitted your problem will occur with your catalyst and emissions regarding your mot i have one injected sj in the workshop at the mo will have a good look at it in the morning if its any help give us a ring at the workshop 2morrow would be glad to help if we can regards bob 01932 355745

loads of people convert the SJ to run on an SU, myself included.. but thats converting from standard carb to a different carb.

BUT

sounds like you have a "new" sj... you dont have a carburettor.

your SJ runs on single point injection instead of a carb.

so there's no carb to convert.

so like bob saie above - without the ECU and the injection unit the engine is unlikely to go through emissions test on the MOT.

the carb'd models dont give the correct lambda readings to go through for the model year of an injection sammy.

besides all that, i would try and get the injection system up and running.. i'd much prefer that to a carb'd sammy any day! rare as hens teeth the type of sammy you have... so try and get it sorted. youll be better off in the long run for it.. Wink

i know you describe your faults as "un certain" but can you give us a description of the fault what exactly is it doing non start? running rough? misfireing? why do you think your problem is fuel related

The engine is running rough and flooding , tell tell is the plugs are black , sooty , I have looked at the carb and the single point but all in good order . When I stop and start again even if it a few secs the Sammy runs worse a small press on the throttle stalls it . Hope this make sense , Any idears

No it runs better when it's warm , but still runs rough if say I stopped to pop in a shop say 60 sec tops and restart the Sammy it floods like mad stalls at low throttle . It runs high ideal 3000rpm cold

during warm up it is necessary to correct the fuel air mixture the temp sensor informs the ecu of the engine temprature the ntc (negative co efficient of temprature) sensor reduces the resistance as the temprature rises to do a quick check use a multimeter set to ohms check resistance across the two terminals with a cold engine this should give you a high ohms reading ie thousands of ohms then check when engine is warm this should give you a low ohms reading ie hundreds of ohms if a sensor has gone open circuit ie high resistance this would tell the ecu to give maximum fueling all the time regardless of engine temp hence over fueling hope this helps

That may help , I will have to pass this on to a friend it's a bit high tec for me but I kinda see what your saying , would it be best to take it to a garage for this test , also is this going to be a straight forward fix or another wild goose chase for parts ?

very quick fix if indeed it is the problem the sensor is located adjacent to the thermostat housing at the front of the inlet manifold just undo it with a ring spanner and put the new one in advisable to do this when engine cold as you will loose a small amount of coolant dont want you burning yourself
the sensor shouldnt be that expensive most reputable after market parts suppliers should sell them you dont need to go to suzuki as i said try the quick check first its quite straight forward if you or a friend has a multimeter regards bob
