I have my iPhone 3GS which is a cool piece of kit, and I'm wondering if I buy the Navigon app, would it work with off road routes?
Has anyone any experience and/or suggestions?

Navigon won't work off-road, it onlny works with whatever maps are loaded for the area you're driving. However Navigon is bar far the best sat-nav app for the iPhone. I wouldn't be without mine. I also have the US version which is even better than the European one.
There are a few apps that work on OS mapping. As Dave mentioned, Memory Map has an iPhone app, but you need the memory map software on your PC - no Mac version is available, so that rules you out.
Route Buddy has an app called ATLAS that you can add OS maps too but its a bit clunky and expensive - £20 per OS map.
There are lots of navigation apps for the iPhone. It really depends on what you want them to do. In some cases you'd be better off with a separate GPS.

Does Navigon work on grid references? I tried putting them in the iPhone but it's not having it!
I have a cheap old pc laptop somewhere, I wonder if I can plug it into the iPhone to gain GPS... but then checking a map the old fashioned way is cheaper and probably an easier option!

Viewranger does an iPhone app and it uses the proper OS maps. You can buy chunks of maps and add to them as you want, the software and chunks start at £20.
I use it on my Nokia and it is pretty good stuff.

I couldn't find an app that did both on & off road senibly so for 'on road' navigation I use NDrive on my iphone & it seems ok (it's only €5.99 I think) & I use geolives for off road but only beacause I live in Ireland & I already owend the data, If I wasn't alredy using geolives It'd probably be veiw ranger as i covers a more sensible range of countrys.
