Hello everyboby, I'm Kostas and this is my beast!
Before tuning:
Now:
On brief, the car's modifications are:
approximately 80mm lift, with K Y B shocks (i don't remember the type), springs from Chevy Niva and a HooDoo Kit, 1:4.44 differential ratio and a small guard trim in front
I've searched all baxter's site to find a solution of making my car taller.
I want to do something like this.
and by that i mean i want to make the car that tall and with no angle in the front axles so i can place a tyre size of 235/85/16!!!
my questions are: how can i make this project, which shocks absorbers shall i use and how about the central axles?
one last question: can i make an INOX snorkel with safari hat and how can i make it so no drains at all will reach the air filter?
i hope you are not tired with all these questions but as you can see i love the car and my father and i have built it from scrach.
regards,
Kostas

Welcome to the forum, Kostas. Really nice looking motor!
To fit those tyres you'll need much lower axle ratios than you've got at the moment. Probably about the 4.6 that I believe Lada dealers in Russia can supply.
Look at what the lads doing diesel conversions have done as regards mounting the front diff. Basically, you make mounts that fix to the antiroll bar and the crossmember to put the diff where you want it. Props will still work ok at that angle, but you may have to consider lengthening them (local maker).
Rear axle will twist as you lift the vehicle so the spring seats will have to be repositioned to level the base of the spring and avoid a 'banana' shape. The panhard rod mounts will have to be modified to keep the rod at the same angles in relation to the axle, but that's not a big problem.
Basically, keep the vehicle as low as possible to maintain satability. The higher you go the more likely it is to roll when on or off road! Height may LOOK macho but is not always desireable for a vehicle that is expected to be able to do something!
Most snorkels available today have an arrangement at the top that separates water from the air, so that only air reaches the filter and the water drains away. Best bet is to have a look at one, then duplicate it. I have a vague feeling that a snorkel for a Suzuki Grand Vitara may be modified to fit a Niva, but I haven't checked this yet.
Keep us informed as you go along.
Regards,

To get a big lift without increasing the angle in the front axles you need to do what's called a cross-member lift; and as Hoodoo says you'll probably need to alter the lengths of the arms in the rear.
There's 2 write-ups of cross-member lifts on my site, one in Spanish and one by Simon Allan (who's a member here and/or lada.co.uk). They're linked from my lifts page: www.ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/resources/BaxterLift.htm under "How high can I go?"
There's also a page on how bigger tyres you can fit (www.ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/resources/TyreSize.htm), and how to trim the arches if you want bigger (www.ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/resources/ArchTrim.htm).

The article that baxter mentioned is mine
Doing the cross member lift can be done a few ways. you can lok at my way in the article, or you can search on here for a guy called madman and his post is called "yes I know I'm nuts, but" and that shows you how he did his.
the hard part if your going to use it hard off road (I like to ) is getting the rear suspension geometry right again as hoodoo says. Mine is lifted 80mm on the rear, and already I have problems with the angles of those two smaller links on the top of the axle. they need re-positining to get rid of some of the angle.
If you need any help with specific parts let me know I'd be happy to help

you have a nice looking wagon there mate and welcome to the sight, if you want bigger wheels then with the lift you have and a guard trim you will be able to fit 30" tyres and at a push 31" tyres. as the others have said more lift looks cool but increases the chance of tipping over. good luck and keep the pics and mods coming.

First of all i have to thank you A LOT for these quick answers!
the car's use is for off-road(espesially) and on-road for some city movements. Some of the times, a hard-off-road trip to the greek mounains is recommended from our Niva-Doctor!
I've read (and studied) "simonallen's" project (great job by the way ) and i think it's the best solution for me!!
As for your advises about the tyres i think i will stick to the 30s''.
At the moment i design a new bumper with A-Bar for the lights and a slot for the winch.
I'm trying to keep the approach angle as big as possible but i'm still on the designing part...
As for the lift i'm still thinking about it because as you said , the whole geometry of the car changes and it becomes dangerous..
p.s: feels good to be in this forum, there is a whole treasure in here!!
once more, thank you a lot for this warm welcome and for your nice words about this car!!

Anybody got a link to Madman's lift? That would be worth looking at as well.
Manos, in Greece, has good plans for a winch bumper for Nivas. You still got them, Simon? (They're full size as well!)

I still have them john, ready to be copied and passed on if needs be
and thanks for the compliments Koz.
to fit 30 inch tyres you already have enough lift. don't forget that the tyres will lift it as well. I have 80mm, and am going to be fitting 7.50 16 tyres to mine with the use of a grinder and welder

hello everybody, still reading almost everyday (but not posting for quite a while)
John, I have designed a new bumper, but I am in deep sh^%t down here (crisis and all) and since I had no intention of making the bumper soon, I gave the drawings and all to my friend Michael www.protrack.gr , trusting his skills and aesthetics, just in case someone's got interested.
So there is an ethical issue, I can't pass on the original plans to anybody right now.
But I can always post an image and note that I didn't do much extra work on the original plan, just trimmed a litte the edges upwards.
I am sure that if you are interested you can use your skills and imagination to fill up the gaps, or even contact Michael (I think you already had, wright ?)
Regards, Manos

Manos,
Good to hear from you. I think your bumper design could be just what Kostas is looking for? And, if Michael can supply, and he's in Greece.....???
My locker should be on the way from Michael soon. He's on his own in the shop at the moment but he says it's ready!

Unsure what weight but it looks the business.
You could build it with thin plate and put gussets where needed for strength?.

the last bumper is from a man, Christos, in nivaclub.gr.we are in the same forum. His Nickname is xristost. I can ask anything you like about the bumper and send it to you. He reconstructed his niva from scratch.
This is the post of his reconstructed niva but you have to use a translator!

Hello, I'm back!!
With a few mods you might like!!!
First of all i changed the tyres because the previews ones were a little dangerous on road...
the new ones are fedima extreme competition on mangels rims (no problem with the arches!!)..the size is 195/80-15
Also bucket seats were installed (and i really love them!!!)
The last month me and my father were working on a new bumper with a winch in it...the result is this!
And this is the console with the switches for the lights
For now, i put on the summer tyres (the car's use in on road now and it's purpose it to tow a boat) and a more up-to-date picture is this!
That's all for now, i'll keep you update for any new modification!!!
