Hi guys,
Been looking half heartedly for a while now for something to get muddy in, well, I wrote off my old car, and decided it was time to split the settlement and get two cars - which meant I could get a toy!!
So here she is:
Not had a huge amount done to it by the previous owner, SPOA, wheel and prop spacers, rear disc conversion, and cobra bucket seats. Looking to learn the ropes and then decide from there how best to take things further. I'm using it as my daily driver, so can't go too extreme!!
Have to say, very pleasantly surprised at it's road manners, really not bad at all. (Especially after I replaced the leaky steering box last weekend!)
Now, a few questions, I'm replacing a rear half shaft as the bearing is on it's way out, and the oil seal is leaking. As I'm swapping shafts, Simon's how-to isn't telling me everything I need to know...
Would I be better of a) removing the existing hub whilst the old half shaft is in situ, or b) taking it out, trying to get the hub off, and fitting the hub on the new half shaft once it's in place? If a), how do I get the half shaft out with nothing to hit with a BFH? or b) how to get the hub off a bare half shaft?
Also, where best to get a new oil seal from?
Lastly, here is my steering linkage, please don't scream!!
I want to fit a half hi steer using a merc arm, got the part numbers and understand about modifying the top link with a track rod end (thanks Silverzuk!), but where does everything fit?
I'm assuming that the merc arm mounts to the caliper mounting bolts, and the arm running from the drop link to the passenger hub mounts to the end of that? Does the rod running between the wheels then just stay as it is, with a hole where the first rod once connected?
Sorry for so many questions, I'll pipe down soon!
Cheers guys,
Sam

Firstly,
HI! and welcome to difflock!
good to see another zook owner in sunny west sussex!!!
To be honest, it would be easiest get a whole shaft/hub unit and replace the whole lot
I have a friend in worthing with many suzuki parts who could probably sort out a whole unit quite cheap if you're interested.
but to get the shaft out, it's easiest if you use a slide hammer.
(I think I know a few people who might have one I could borrow)
Bolt it onto the shaft bolts and give it a few whacks and it should come out.
It's not a massively difficult job to take the collar and bearing off the shaft and put a new one on. A bench vice and an angle grinder will help a lot with this!
As for the oil seal, you could probably order one from Suzuki in bognor (if it's still open). Otherwise there is a suzuki garage in hove. The oil seal part number should be in the stickies somewhere...
Here it is:
Quote: |
Rear wheel bearing part numbers for all SJ410, 413 Samurai and vitara
Suzuki part numbers
Bearing – 09269-35009
Bearing retainer – 43485-73000
Oil seal – 09283-48007
Spacer (not needed if bearing above is used) – 43429-77201 |
Steering bar - AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH
yikes that's worrying!
Unfortunately I can't really help you with the merc hi steer as I've no experience with this... but I'm sure someone who has done it will be along at some point!
This is the link from the stickies:
http://www.zukikrawlers.com/showthread.php?t=836&highlight=mercedes
may help, some good piccies in there
As I say it's good to find someone else with an SJ! At the minute theres only a few of us around worthing area that go out exploring...
Soon, there will be a few more of us out and about. I'm gonna be planning a few laning expeditions with some guys who have a maverick, a range rover, a defender and a disco. Should be over hampshire way so you should tag along

Hi George, thanks!
The arches are made from one of the big blue plastic barrels you get cleaning chemicals etc. in, my work uses loads, so it doesn't take much to chop 4 hoops out of a barrel, cut roughly to fit, and then self tappers into the lip on the arch. Then you can trim them up neatly(ish!!) to finish....
HTH,
Sam

Cheers for the welcome guys, seems there's a few from Sussex on here!!
Always willing to come out and get muddy, although I'm very much a beginner, so Everest isn't quite ready for me yet!
Cheers Twiss, I can get hold of a slide hammer, so think I'll take the hub off, then remove the shaft with the slide hammer, put the new one in, and bolt up the hub, caliper and wheel. As I've got a pair of shafts with bearings already pressed on, that'll cost me a bit in time, but save me cash getting a new set with hubs attached.
Bognor Suzuki are still around, so I'm giving them a call at lunchtime.
Oh, and Des, I like my wheels too, they're pretty!!!

I'm pretty sure all you have to do to get the shaft out is:
Take off the wheel and brake drum
undo the 4 bolts holding the bearing retainer plate on
(if you have a model without the bearing retainer plate I think you have to remove the brake drum backing plate instead/as well)
slide hammer the **** out of it
it should come out
I haven't taken mine out for aaaaages tho so double check before hammering it!!!
hopefully this helps!!!

To be fair, I will probably go to my local factors on the A27 for the seal, but Bognor Suzuki still have a website...
Twiss, mine's had a disc conversion done, but what you've written makes sense - I do know that the drum cover has been cut down as it acts as the bearing retainer, so it's that I'll be attaching a slide hammer to an whacking!!
Thanks for the positive comments everyone, I did loads of lurking on here to figure out what to look for in my chosen first 4x4, I think I did ok, yes there are a few bits that need sorting, but the flip side is it wasn't too expensive, and came with loads of spares and goodies (like an external roll cage for me to fit).
Only rust is a small patch on each sill, which I can soon get plated, oh, and the exhaust is blowing in a couple of places - the down pipe just before the centre box, and the front edge of the centre box itself. Prepped up with a wire brush and 2-pack metal epoxy to clean off the gun gum that's on it, and try to do a better job!
If that doesn't work, I'll just cut the offending sections out, and replace with some flexi tube - come MOT time, it'll just run a bit lean to get through emissions!!
Sam
(ps, does anyone know anyone in West Sussex who can properly bend CDS tube? I want to extend the cab cage to cover the arches, and be tied into the bumpers, can get the tube, and weld it, but have no facility to bend it!!)

You could get rhino ray in brighton to do it...
he makes roll cages
But it would probably be quite expensive!
