hi guys,

My girlfriend is looking for a replacement for her SPAM and as Im so busy trying to get/keep my landrovers on the road we want something thats, well, less time consuming in the workshop

If we were looking for a surf which are the ones to avoid? is rust a problem on earlier machines? best ones to go for? Are they easy to work on and get spares for (routine servicing as of course they never go wrong, right?) Whats the going rate for the different models?
Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks

Kevin

Hi Kev, Surfs are cool, go for the 3 ltr for peace of mind and more oomphh! I believe that you can find rust at the bottom of the doors.... and that's it I think!

If you're wondering why I'm selling mine, it's because I fancy a change, and I want something new to write about. My Smurf has been in about 6 editions of '4x4 Mart' magazine, including the one that's due out sometime next week.

As for prices, I've seen them advertised anywhere between £2.5 - 6k... and that's for 2nd gens like mine!

For more info, http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/ is a brilliant site to join.

Good luck!

answer to question number 1
Quote:
If we were looking for a surf which are the ones to avoid?

well 3ltr models are faultless 2.4 are imo not quite as good grunt wise neither are to avoid both pull well some earlier 2.4's did have a head problem but that is only a problem with a minority

answer to question 2 is no i don't think the only one i had seen had been by the sea all the time

abso best is the 3ltr ssrg (top spec!!!) 3ltr td engine with cruise control a/c e/w tinted glass recaro seats etc etc if you are lucky you might get a huge radio/cd player from japan or sat nav

quite easy to work on (TBH i have not done any work to it myself but garage guy down the road reckons they are really easy to work on EASIER THAN LAND ROVERS!!)
part prices some people think that it is expensive to buy parts have a look here at part prices
http://www.toyotahilux.com/
mate had a v8 disco (sold it now!!) it had a fairly big bump part prices cost £250-300 in body panels for the surf £150 fantastic
never go wrong only part i had to replace was a steering idler arm (recall in japan!!) nothing else did suffer from overheating under load ie going up sugarloaf mountain at 35mph with 3 people and a 40kg dog found out that garage had put to much oil it transmission (auto)

any more questions pm me

going rate is between £2000-3500 for 2.4 and £3000-6000 for 3ltr as a dealer price/autotrader

ebugger is £600-2500 for 2.4 and £1750-5000 for 3ltr

gen 3 are all 3ltr and expect to pay 6k plus at dealer and 4k+ on ebugger

these things are almost indistructable they can pull trees mine has had pretty much half a suzuki in the back (2 axles 9 springs engine 2 steering boxes) so great for carrying land rover bits in (sorry couldn't resist the temptation!!)
Very Happy

Hi Kev. Not all 2.4L Surfs are dogs. If buying privately and the vendor says the head has been replaced with a modified one, make sure you get proof.
If it is a fairly fresh import the underneath will be spotless as they don't salt the roads in Winter in Japan. While it is in this condition get the insides of the chassis, cross members etc Waxoyled and the body undersealed. Just change the oil every 3K KM and the filters ever six. It should be a good'un for 500K miles.

Like Tinyone said, the steering idler arm can be a pain but once replaced with a more beefy unit, with a grease nipple, they are no more trouble.

The only thing I have broken on mine was the anti-roll bar brackets but I was giving it some serious abuse at the time. Laughing
