Okay, I'll tell.

JLX tended to be better specced with electic bits and bobs and i *think* it meant thet they were 16v.

Anyone else?

Steve

doh sorry guys, meant J Embarassed

Been trying to sort out a 4x4 this week to stop my audi getting wrecked with the gritters and snow up in scotland. Off-roading always looked fun so I thought i could get good use out of the likes of a vitara.

great forum also!!

the best advise i can give is just buy one in the best condition you can - look out for rust around body mounts and wheelarches - If it's got electric anything, make sure it works.

Awesome.

Most chassis are pretty good, it's generally the body;

Around the body mounts, rear seatbelt mounts and all the seams around the rear floor, sills, and wheel arches (mainly the rear).

check some of the above, and if you start to find rust, start looking harder...

they mainly look good until you look underneath.

Almost everything else is pretty cheap/easy to fix.

Meant to ask, whats the deal with getting it into 4 wheel drive. do you need to get out and lock the hubs on these? say from 1992 to 1998?

4x4 is selected in the cab with the transfer box lever. it selects between RWD and 4WD

3 types of front hub;

solid - always engaged. will always give 4WD when seletced.

manual free wheeling - will only give 4WD when set to 'lock'

Automatic free wheeling - automatically select between locked and unlocked.

free wheeling (or locking) hubs increase efficency a bit on the road - if there is any chance you'll need 4WD leave them locked, simple.

from what ive seen, there doesnt seem to be any logic to it.

theres one in a scrap yard near me. a 1999, JLX 16v, everythings electric, but its got fixed hubs.

ive bought JLX and JX models before, and theyve all come with manual hubs.

the later LWB diesel models ive seen, all seem to have auto locking hubs.

but they did also fit auto hubs to earlier models.

maybe it was whatever the first owner specified when buying the car new from the dealership?

Sport means no extras at all. thats not a bad thing, far less to go wrong.

stop worrying about equipment, buy on condition!

Sorry guys, I should have worded it a bit better. I'm not getting too caught up on electric windows, nice seats etc. I was just wanting to make sure it wasnt a one of model without 4x4, or low box etc.

I managed to get a very clean 1998 sport in black with a full service history and a ton of receipts. Really nice so I'm chuffed to bits.

Right where do get a snokel, big tyres Laughing I better wait till i pick the thing up first Laughing

Thanks for all the help guys.
