Hey Guys...

One or two of you have noticed my avatar has changed and have commented on my trucks new appearance. So with many piccies and in many posts i give you the Mutant Rhino ( as its been christened in my club lol )

Firstly i bought my SJ from Ebay.

Nice looking car !!! Solid and a bit different. SO ... got it home and duely put it thru its manx test. after a bit of work, we had...

TAAA DAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ! ! !

Soooo... looked tidy enough and was great for a few months doing lane runs and the odd trial

until it was time for the Mule... On the weekend of the Mule everything was prepared and this is how we set off on Saturday afternoon..

Nice eh... prepared and tidy and a truck you would be proud to turn up tp a decent challenge in....

But it didnt stay that way for long. After a gruelling 24 hours this is how he came home..

OUCH ! ! ! ! !

But, we soldiered on and cleaned him up and ran on through a few more trials and eventually he came to a standstill at Moaney Woods where; after dragging a Vitara half way roung the first section his poor clutch simply couldnt take it any more and gave up the ghost completely.

So... Home he was dragged and into the garage he went. Firstly, we had to ascertain the damage to the clutch...

(This pic is just for you Stig !!! )

hehehe soooo out with the engine and time to fit a new clutch . . .

mmmmmmmmmmmm Shiny ! ! ! !

and while i was at it, i also thought it would be good to fit some power steering too . . .

Sweeeeeeeet ! ! !

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Ahhhh f*ck it ...

soooo step one.... buy a knackered tintop and cut the back off

Then we need some of this . ..

and some of this

and some more of this

then this

and this

then weld this bit in place

and a lot more work i forgot to get pics of until you end up with something like this

now its all very well having the back but theres a gaping great hole above my head . . .

how am i going to fix this ????

I KNOW !!!!!

get the 9" grinder out and chop off the roof of the tintop as well !!!

errrrrrrrrrrr wee bit big me thinks...

ok,... GRINDER TIME again

looking much better....

May i point point out at this time that i am doing work as well, im just behind the camera when pics are taken !!!!

HEHEHE

soooo

how do we look so far ????

not bad !!!!! not bad at all...

Keep checking back coz tomorrow its weld the roof on and lots of other jobs... I will modify this message as i do the work

Sunday 22nd Feb

OKOKOK so ive been out there today but i feel like ive not got anywhere. Decided to address the roof and started by shaping it a bit more and priming what is to become the inside roof before i try to find a head lining of some description

ok so priming over i realised i was ******** for the next couple of hours while that dried off... soooo decided to use brush on primer to seal the back and the tailgate and the odd bit ive attacked with the sander over the past few weeks....

i also sealed all round the bottom of the rear door and all round from arch to arch to seal the rear back off from the cab. This is why there is only primer half way down the rear door while the sealant dries.....

sooo... with the rear sealant done and the roof tacky i decided i couldnt wait any longer and went to crack on...

Sooo on with the roof and out with the welder. I would like to point out that there are no pics of my welding coz today i couldnt get the right setting on the welder - plus i got it wrong the first time so i had to remove the spot welds and do it again...

But you can have a piccy of the roof welded into place with a bit of filler hiding the ground out welds..

soo as we stand i have a roof of some description. I will have to use sealant rather than filler at the front coz i know it will flex slightly so that will be the next job

Saturday 28th Feb / Sunday 1st March

Well been busy again. Had to strip all the brush primer off as it reacted horribly with the spray primer. WIsh id found that out BEFORE i coated half the truck !!!

>Sad

Ahh well.

Soooo after a day of nothing but sanding and swearing i managed to apply a new coat of non reactive filler after hours of sanding. God i now hate bodywork prep lol

Primed up, its saturday night, looks NO different from when i started this morning, just a different coloured primer. Ahh well. Giving up and going home !!!

Back Sunday... managed to work my a$$ off and more or less have the roof complete. still getting a few reactions to the crap primer but im trying to remove them as i go.

but... at hometime today, this is how we look..

so far so good !!

Saturday 7th March

finished the final repairs to the windscreen surround. not much picture worthy, just to tell you that the wipers not dont try to fall off every time i use them

soooo Sunday 8th... PAINT DAY !!!

as it says... time to apply the paint... or more to the point ... to hand the paint gun over to Zoe to paint.

however... valuable lesson : DONT TRY TO PAINT WHEN ITS COLD

hahahaha ... i have that on camera... stop hiding ! ! ! !

Soooooooooooooooo

how do we look ? ? ? ? ?

Heheh Cheers Henry, Its a shame coz id have liked ur old shell but i managed to persuade a guy to part with his rotten one which was ok for the parts i needed.

I still intend on swapping the 410 transfer box over and mouting the winch up front yet so it isnt finished by a long way. Thought the (many) pics may be apprecieted hehehe

Wink One suggestion though, even though its too late Rolling Eyes You should of cut some of the drip rail from the donor tin top and welded it along above the door Laughing Just a small thing then if you told me suzuki sold them like that id probably believe you Laughing Exellent job though sorry if im knit picking

Cheers Mark. I did toy with either welding the rail on or de-railing the sides completely and leaving the rear rail over the back screen. The rail you see on the sides is kinda structural and to remove and weld it up and smooth it down would have removed a lot of the strength for the panel joins. was easier all round in the end to leave them there and round them off.

BTW, how much vitara engine have u got for sale ?? PM me. Very Happy

Andy.

Nice Job! Brought back memories for me. I did almost the same some years ago. Only differances are; I cut the rain channel off at the back, and I didn't cover the top with tin. I used front section of LWB Hard top. I wanted to be able to take the roof off in the sunshine Very Happy Oh and I didn't paint it white Wink My paint took a bit longer Rolling Eyes

I think White is a great colour Smile If I stuff my door in (like I did a few weeks ago) it's a major job to repaint another panel.

Plain White is a good choice... and retro COOL! Cool
