hi ive just got a jeep with LPG and was wondering should the gas stay in the tank over time or does it dissapate through the engine over time

You mean when parked?

There should be NO loss of gas when parked with the engine off over any amount of time.

If your gas level is dropping you have a leak, fix it immediately.

i can smell it when its just about empty but i havent had the tank full yet as i am having to change all the trailing arms for the mot and ive only had it 2 weeks, what sort of job would it be to fix a lpg leak would it have to go to a garage?

You certainly need someone the knows LPG tanks & systems, if you dont know anything about it.
Please dont go messing about with it.

If you suspect there is a leak,
get the system emptied or sealed before there is a naked flame or spark around the vehicle.

If you are smelling it, it can be pooled down low, & very easy to ignite.
