The gearbox isn't particularly weak on the Terrano, the clutch can be more of a problem.
Is you mate sure that he needs a replacement, has he tried a change of gearbox oil first? And is it the 'box, or could it be the diff?

He just said there was a "nasty noise"(his words not mine) in 5th. with 140k on the clock i am thinking it needs a bit more than gearbox oil.

my mechanic tried to warn us off terranos on the basis of gearbox problems, but from owning it 2 years and discussing with other members of the nissan 4x4 owners club i have not found it to be anything like such a common case.

There is a common fault on these boxes, as far as I know Nissan use basically the same box across the Terrano II and the D21 Pickup range.
The input shaft bearing goes, at about 150 thousand miles, give or take 30 thou depending how it`s used and how much oil it has.
It`s a recognised fault, you can buy a kit off the shelf that replaces the input shaft and the counter gear, it`s even sold on E-Bay!
My symptoms started out as a slight crunch into 2nd untill warmed up, then,
Noise in all gears apart from 5th, then,
Losing gear oil from bell housing, then,
Difficulty engaging 4th gear, then,
Godallmighty noise in all gears.
My gearbox is at the menders as we speak.
ps, get someone else to `whip the box out and have a look` !

Fair enough Barny, new one to me. I know the clutch isn't brilliant (already fitted a new one to my 01 wagon at 50k) but wasn't really aware of any specific gearboc problems. At current mileage then it will be about 6 years before I get to 150k, so I'll keep an eye on it around then.
