Can anyone recommend the best approach to removing the injector on No 5 cylinder on a 2.7 CRD engine ?

I thought the bigger problem was access to this particular injector on the 2.7 fitted to the Grand Cherokee CRD. I just wondered whether there was a "workaround" that did not involve engine removal ?

I have a problem with my 2.7 crd injector as well.
I have a workshop manual on cd that I got on ebay and it says to remove injector 4 and 5, you have to support the engine and remove engine mounting bolts and then lower the engine enough to get the injector out.
I don't know anything about diesel engines but it seems injector number 4 is leaking on mine. There is a slight hissing noise and smoke from around the injector. I have tried to find out the problem on a search and think it might be the copper seal that needs replacing?

Hi I had this problem at work a while back, you can get to the injector by udoing the engine mounts and letting the engine drop down,
you need to undo the gearbox cross member and screw in some longer bolts to allow the gearbox to drop as well.
there is a seat cleaner tool to clean the seats of the injector in the head, some people dont bother (including merc dealers) and clean up with a decoke brush.
The bolts holding the injector down are single use stretch bolts and the copper washers are special too.
i had more luck getting the bits for my local merc truck dealer (same motor as sprinter) then the muppts at my local jeep dealer
egr cleaner waas good for breaking down the gunk around the injector as well
one final tip take care with the leak off pipe it is fragile as hell,, and is 80 quid to replace
hope this helps

Hi,
Thanks for the reply 4x4bigstu. I have actually fixed the leaking injector seal at number 4 cylinder and the other 3 at the front. The snow was bad when it started leaking and I had to fix it outside, so I ended up leaving the 5th one for now.
I removed the engine mounts and lowered the engine but it didn't lower enough to let me at number 5. Loosening the transmission crossmember sounds a good idea for when I replace number 5, thanks.
The first 3 injectors came out quite easily with a little help from a metal spacer where the injector clamp sits, and a small heal bar used on its end, to ease the injector up. The fourth one (that was leaking) was a mess. I sprayed wd40 around it and left it overnight and tried to wiggle it from side to side slightly with a long screwdriver then the heal bar to lift it. When it came out you could see where the copper washer was leaking.
I was getting messed around by the Jeep dealer so I bought the bolts and copper washers off ebay from someone selling merc parts and they arrived the next day - 5 bolts and 5 copper washers just over £12 delivered?
I don't have a tool for reaming out the hole so I taped a small piece of wet and dry paper to the end of a 3/8 socket extension which seemed to be the right fit for the flat suface. On the injector I used another piece of wet and dry with a hole in it and used a metal washer the right size to flat it down. I sucked all the bits out of the injector hole with a piece of hose pipe taped to an old vaccum cleaner. You probably think it sounds a bit of a bodge job, but I was careful and it looked fine and seems to have worked ok.
What is the 'leak off pipe' if thats not a stupid question? Is it the fuel return?
Thanks, GP

Glad to hear the job went ok,
The leak off pipe is the fuel return on top of the injectors, sounds like you were ok and did not break it like me
good luck with number 5!!!
cheers stu

Hi Stu
I didn't break the pipe on the injectors but I did break the T junction on the clear pipe betwen the high/ low pressure pump.
I think it was a combination of the very cold weather and it had gone brittle anyway. I hardly moved it and it snapped off. I bought some rubber fuel pipe and a new T piece from a local engineering shop and also used the pipe to the bleed valve that I couldn't seem to get to work.
I found it easier to remove the pipe from the bleed valve and attach a vaccum pump to the pipe. Maybe need a special tool for the bleed valve?
Thanks again, GP
