Having trundled my way along the many frosty snowy roads of the cambs / beds area over the past week or so, something worrying has dawned on me.
WHERE HAVE ALL THE SERIES LAND ROVERS GONE?!?
As I peered through my letter box of vision, the heater emitting less puff than lurke street car park's toilet blowers I sat grinning to myself in a frost bitten insane way. I cant be the sole surviving Series driver, can I?!
Ive encountered disco's galore, the odd P38 Rangie and many defenders but the classics appear to have dropped off the chart!
Please tell me there are others like me still soldiering on, wearing 4 layers of clothing, demisting windscreens with a rapidly disintergrating used tissue and dodging the dislodged hibernating spiders that fall from the flaps in the tilt!
Series owners unite!
(Once you've packed your winter spares and extra tool kit of course )
Regards,
Pete 'trapped in the past' Mills

I still see a few Series motors in my part of Leicestershire, between Lester and Lufbra.
And I hope to get mine fixed next year. Depends if I get too used to all the comforts of my 300tdi auto Disco....

If by 'classics' you mean RR's then yes there are quite a few locally in this part of Essex, but P38's appear to be all but extinct (can't imagine why!) Plenty of poseurs/bimbo's in late model RR's & disco's of course, but I do agree that the good old 'series' LR's are like rocking horse sh.t Something to do with an ageing population (I've had 5 series LR's in my time but would'nt want one now, esp. in winter) & a lack of interest in anything that has a 0-60 time of less than 10secs by the younger generation perhaps.

There are plenty of series LR's here in Warwickshire.. I saw at least 3 on my drive to Milton Keynes this morning... mostly on the back roads and farm tracks.

gazillions of them up this way. I think every second house as one tucked-away for use in the winter.

Hey, I've been driving mine all week. Mainly because the Jap crap has got road tyres fitted still.
And I'm not cold - I have an Eberspacher wagon heater fitted to the bulkhead, toasty, pop it on 10 mins before setting off and everything is defrosted too.
I've seen two 88" Series III knocking around town, and I'm sure I saw a 109 CSW go past the house too, they're all still out there.
Waiting for bad weather.

There are at least two tht get driven to my work, and I saw two more on the way home today. I'd have been driving mine still if it wasn't in an endless rebuild... sigh.

i had a right lump in my throat the other day, i was almost sick!
i went for a wander to my local scrappy and to my dismay there were 2 series 3 88wb's one very early 110, the 2.5na derv still fired and it was in no worse nick than my 90 when i got it 3 years ago.
there was also 4 discovery 1's and as far as i could see there was nothing wrong with them but a bit of rust.
needless to say i came home with pockets full of bits, like series window locks spare light lenses badges... indicators 300tdi coolant pipes
i blame the £2000 cash back scheme, its tempting too many die hard owners.

Where would one look if they were after a S3 109 for around £1000 (if possible)?

Plenty of older motors about, and still doing the job.
Steve and I out today for a play in the snow. 1971 series 2A and 1972 RRC.
Both used a lot despite having 200 TDi and TD5 stable mates.
you get far more waves and smiles in an old one.

No you are certainly not the last one!
I am still holding the Series flag way over here in sunny Malaysia....be it perhaps one among the very few.
But it is true you can hardly find Series Land Rovers here.
But I share your nostalgia when I have to drive in heavy rain with the windscreen and the side slide windows getting misty and having to wipe but I use a cloth.... Not to mention the leaks from the roof coming down the door pillar or bulkhead, wet floorboard. I thought I had this solved but it is back again.
And when there is a flooded road, thats when we proudly go ahead of the rest.
I have not been on the forum, but certainly have been keeping in touch.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.
Jega.

About a decade ago they were used reasonably commonly here. But after that the Rangie classics became quite cheap. So the Rangie took over as the offroader and cheap commuter.
The Series vehicles are now more for the enthusiast. They usually own at least 10 of the things and can only drive one at a time on Sundays. This means that you see at least 90% less on the road due to these hoarders. I doubt that too many series vehicles have been scrapped, they have just been retired and are parked out on the farm in a paddock under a tree.

I "USED" too last year.. This was my daily drive soon as I passed my test
My 1969 2a 2.25D fully rebuilt series drove every single day from 21/08/2008 to 1/12/2008, Which wasnt a long period I know, But I absolutley loved it!.
I then moved over to a 1988 90 2.5TD on the 1/12/2008 and I have practically done a rolling restoration (Meaning all work done whilst vehicle was in daily use) Fitted a 200TDI, All new doors, repaint etc
Incase your interested..
90 When bought
90 as it now stands
Back to the original topic. I loved my 2a although it wasnt quite finished and needed some more bits sorting out, I had a habit of changing roofs but stayed with a truck cab in the end (For looks perposes). I only used to get about 15mpg with my rebuilt 2.25D but I pretty much had foot down everywhere.
I still have my 2a and since I have stopped using it I have fully waxoyl'd the immaculate gloss painted chassis. I also have a brand new Reconditionned S3 gearbox to fit and will also be fitting some Parrabolics and a new steering box. Also plan to fit a 200TDI (So it can be ran on B100 bio-diesel) aswell as Discovery axles converted for leaf-springs.
My 2a is not standard and has a majority of S2a and S3 panel work, S3 box and a mix of various 2.25 Diesel engine components. Not forgetting the Defender Dash!. So I dont plan to keep this motor original.
I bought the Defender as it was faster, safer, more economical and more capable offroad than my 2a was, plus I always wanted a Defender, Do wish I could drive the Series sometimes though but at the young age of 18 I am too young to be able to insure a 200tdi Defender and a 2a and theres no way I can go back to my series as a daily drive! or not until it has the modifications I mentioned

I've not seen a series motor driving on the road for 6 months maybe. I've seen a few parked up and you kinda learn where to look for them. Those with a coil chassis don't count but there's a few of them knocking about. Maybe the cold wet miserable weather puts them off. Heater like a mouse farting on the window and slower and thirstier than later ones doesn't help.
Can't wait to get mine going again!!
Heated windscreens still available anywhere?
