Hi guys. As some of you will have noticed, I have been lurking around this place for a while now. I have decided to post this thread about my Unimog 404. I've owned it for 2,5 years now, and done quite a few changes to it. As it is now I'm preparing it for a trip to Iceland this summer. So on the cards for now are only things to make it more practical and "comfy" If you can say that about an old 404. As she was when I just got her:

I drove it like this for a while, and do to it's quite "correct" military appearance I entered a military show with it which was quite cool. BUT I'm an offroad guy and ever since I was born my dad has taken me to go offroading in his Land Rovers. So I wanted to make it a more durable offroader. First step was fitting an aluminum bed and getting rid of the ridicously top heavy ambulance body. This helped the offroad ability alot, and I had tonnes of fun crawling:

So time to pick up where I left.
As you can see on the following picture, the chassis wasn't looking good at all. The Unimogs dosn't really have any corrosion issues in the chassis, but still there will be surface rust, and the paint will fall off eventually.
So last winter I decided it was time to give it a slight restoration. So I began taking it apart..

I found a local company that restores ship containers, and had them blast and paint my chassis along with the axles and transmission. But as I was aware of a problem I had when offroading, with the bumper bending, I had to make a reinforcement:

Thanks, yes but the Series2 has gone now in favor of a 110 Smile
Anyways, have to take you guys back in time for little while..
My local blacksmith is very into old Mercs. And back in 1980 he took apart a rusty 230S coupe. And told me he still had the engine somewhere in the barn on a pallet. I was very interested as I knew that it would have higher compression dual carbs and more horsepower. We agreed on a deal, and I picked it up:

I made a engine stand out of some old LR parts and an old engine hoist and washed the engine with a pressure washer, and in true Mog spirit dried it with the Swingfeuer witch now is used for heating my garage when painting and the likes.

Next up was ofcourse engine rebuild.
This was time consuming as the engine really wasn't worth it as it looked to have done a ton of miles. But anyways these engines aren't your'e ordinary runofthemill so I went ahead.
I actually got the last pistonrings IN THE WORLD for it from the Mercedes factory, but they promised me that they would make more if needed Smile

I couldn't use neither the carbs nor the exhaust manifolds on my Mog. (the carbs aren't designed for offroading, so they would floot)
So I rebuid to Mog carbs ant fitted these with a bit of modification, and the Mog exhaust manifold, also with a bit of modifikation:

So.. Time for yet another update.
As promised here goes the story of my 49" Nokia Tyres..
Even before I tore down the mog, I had decided that I would be running beadlocks on it. have been doing this for quite a while on my landy, and it really is impossible to live without when you have first had it! So here's a pic of how it was going to look:

Then me and my brother got this GREAT deal on 10 Nokia 14.00X20"s brand new! So we had to buy them Wink
This in turn ment that I had to make some changes to the mog rebuild plans.
I lifted the cab 2 inches as this was the most I could lift ir without having to tamper with too much of the bodywork. I then had a mate of mine mill me som ally raisers for my springs. Luckily I had previously bought some extended Koni dampers (must have known what was coming)
A size comparison 40"s vs 49"s

That's about it from the rebuild and ofcourse hundreds of other small things have been done to it, and some is still yet to be done.
But here's some various cool pics from back then:

Looks very smart sir.
How do you get on with the increased gearing and relatively low torgue of the petrol engine?
How mauch suspension travel do you get before the front tyres stuff into the arches?

Keep the pictures coming.

Thanks for all the nice comments.
Well actually it isn't quite bad with the gearing.
Without doing any calculations or anything, I would say that it feels to have the same power with the 49"s at it did with the stock engine and 40"s. It feels like it's the same "ratio"
But I tell you, now that I've mounted the 40"s again with this 120bhp engine it goes like a rocket! (well in Mog terms anyway)
And I wouldn't for one minute say that I regretted not fitting a diesel. The diesel is simply to much work and money for no gain in the power department and small gain in the economy department.
But anyways regarding the wheels the biggest problem is the fact that the brakes are very poor with those large dia. wheels and the need for PAS is even more imminent.
Well it's nice to have some projects for later on right? Smile
