I seem to only get notifications to those threads I've contributed to despite clicking on the 'subscribe' button.
Any way to shoot the gremlin responsible?

Seeing as you've posted nearly 8800 times, a fair few of those must be what is technically called "crap".
"Crap" is an excellent way to get involved in threads, thereby ensuring you receive notifications.
It looks like you've started to see some "sense" for a change, and are refraining from posting "crap".
I suggest you change your name to a diminuative form of Gerald....
Not that I want to receive notifications on this thread....

Not what I meant. The self inflicted ones are fine but I've subscribed to complete sections for notification of new threads but it seems not to work
