Evening all, bit of a new boy here with a queery about the gearbox on my 421, it is a 4 speed main box with hi/lo and forward/reverse and for some bizarre reason I can only get 4 hi gears forwards yet it allows 4 hi and 4 lo in reverse which is bit odd, so the thing is, is it possible to put the selector forks in the plate in the wrong position as also the forward/reverse lever works back to front so stick backwards is forwards and stick forwards is reverse? AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH but I still won't change it for a L*** R***r

Sounds like its a bit messy in your gearbox, you should get reverse in the crawler gears only and then full function in all 8 forward. Try the forum on benzworld.org there might be a thread to help you !!!

Second your thoughs on the bonnets up club you have to spend a lot of money on a LR to be as reliable as a benz and go the same places a LR does nt even compare to a G wagen

due to a few diferences in gear boxs we need to know what your runing
do you have the 2 x 4 gears with the intermediate gears and/or the crawler gear
i will have a look in the manual for you but if you can narrow what drive train your using it will make it a whole lot easyer to find what the prob is
we need you model no off the vin plate because yours could of had three different gear boxs
or the gearbox number it will start with "vog"
or photos of the top of the gear box might help

Thanks for those thoughts, It should go 4x2 with no intermediate gears with field and reverse gears in one stick position, so basically it's an 8 speeder, bit like a tractor box, however, I've had the top off the box again today and have removed the tab that stops hi range reverse and now all seems sort of alright, it seems to be that someone has put the hi/lo gears on the wrong way round (if thats's possible), the decal in the cab reads : stick forward; all field and reverse gears, stick backwards all road gears which it now does and the other lever now does hi/lo only in forward gears as it should, thankfully the cab tilted without to much distress so access was really good, hopefully get some pics of it on soon along with that VIN number for minimog, once again thanks for the suggestions.
