I'm thinking of buying a LWB shogun, up to a 97/98 and can't decide whether to go for petrol or diesel. It will be a manual gearbox, I like auto's but decided to go manual this time.
I had a 96 swb diesel (2. pajero auto a few years ago and it was awful on fuel, 20mpg at best driven carefully!
I'm not too concerned about fuel economy these days as I don't do a lot of miles, any long trips we generally take the misses car, but I would like a realistic idea of what economy both engines achieve with a manual box.
Also, I'd like peoples opinion on the diesel in terms of performance. I know the petrol lump is a beast but can't remember what the diesel is like.
Thanks
Paul

Oh, p.s. any major issues to look out for on either model?
Thanks

Diesel is deffenetly better offroad just cause the diesel will deal with water and pull better at low revs.
For me my truck must do off road and road to an equally high standard.................
So I went for the petrol/lpg option. I am constantly ammazed how well it goes offroad. Windscreen depth water (snorkel in installed) no problem and the full rear locker makes it go really well on the rough stuff/mud.
I would go for the petrol/lpg again of the two options. Good relationship with the LPG garage is also an advantage as LPG systems are a little more hassle (mainly as I am not brave enough to work on it myself!)
I average 15-20 mpg but have pushed it to 27mpg once but also down to 5 once
Jon

I plumped for a Shogun LWB 3.5v6 24v. I'd driven a diesel and was disappointed at how gutless it seemed. Think it was 2.5? Not sure if they even make a 2.5? Maybe the 2.8 is better?
Anyway, the 24v has amazing power, especially in super select 4WD. And in normal 2WD it goes like a stabbed rat. It's certainly shamed a few boy racers in it's time. I acheived low 20's on a run with cruise on, but like Jon it can get pretty low if you don't think about what you're doing! I won't tell you what I averaged when I was dragging 5 tons of hardcore around.....

I have a 2.5 diesel L200 - Its not exactly fast or pokey HOWEVER it's a 2ton truck so best not giveing it abit spirited driving all the time. Once it's going though it pulls well and drives fine (manual) Pulls just about anything you attach to it, ive puilled 2 landys out of holes with mine no bother.
Diesel is mint for the deep wading too, deals with it no bother.
