Hi , looks like im in the market for another steering box due tomine developing a bad leak from where the coloume conects to the box. thinking it was just a singal seal i went to toyota with no luck !! it looks like it must be the seals inside and have been advised due to wear in shafts bearings etc new seals mite only work for a few days then let go.
So to cut a long story short, are the steering boxes on the lj70 specific to that model or will one from another model fit ??
thanks jamie

Can't help with fit etc but it might be worth getting a second opinion... when I asked for a caliper seal kit from a main dealer I was told it was no good and they wanted to sell me new calipers. The seal kit is a Toyota part and works fine.
Check out fit, prices and rebuild with Mike at All-American for no bull advice and good prices: info@all-american.nl

Your best hope may be to fit a steering box off a Hilux if one will fit.
They share a few parts.
Check the orientation of the pitman arm, coil sprung model are different to leaf sprung models like a hilux
In oz we take things like that to a power steering specialist.
He can usually tell from a strip down if a seal kit will be successful.
The shafts if worn can be rechromed or metal sprayed to get back the thickness.
Im only familiar with the 75 and 60 series power steering boxes but I imagine the LJ70 wouldnt be too different

Can I suggest a solution at the grand cost of £5.50?
I had a power steering leak on my Range Rover, it was P**sing out! I had in my mind yet another £200 box that was going to last a year or two (I do a lot of towing with it and reversing the trialer is quite hard on the PS), but someone on difflock suggested a tube of stop leak after having great results with it. I decided why not as the box was scrap regardless (worn shaft and seals), I put this stuff in and within a week ALL leaking had stopped. I though that within 6 months it would be leaking again, but I used it 2 years ago and still no leaks, go into frost restoration website and put in M830.
If you decide to use it good luck and let us know how you get on,
Phil

OK just a little update , tried some power steering stop leak and it worked fine until the first time it went on some ruff roads !!!
Seems that i will have to seach around for another box maybe out of a hilux if i can find one.
I'm running some thicker oil in the system for time being which has slowed down the leak a bit. it hasn't needed topped up for 3 weeks now.
thanks for all the replays and info
