|

|
Hi all,
Have found what I am fairly sure is a Unimog lying in a field.
No body, just chassis, engine, gearbox, and prop shafts, ect.
My question is how can I identify which model it is?
I was on my way to an appointment so didn't have time to look for engine or chassis numbers. Or even what state it was really in.
Is it easy to get hold of parts for old Mogs?
I'm quite tempted to offer to tow it away and have a go at getting it running.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
If you post a picture on here of the mog you have spotted, I'm sure somone on this forum will be able to identify what type it is.
Chassis number would help too, normally on the r/h side front chassis rail.

If you can see the propshafts the chances are it isn't a Unimog.

because the mogs have a torque tube suspension (meens that the props are hidden inside the tube that holds the axels in place)
your best bet is to put a pic up because unimogs are not the only portal axel outthere
volvos
simca mamions
and chances are you wont be towing it away without parting with folding stuff most farmers know what they are and what they are worth (thats why its prob sat there in the first place because it wasnt worth what he wanted)

O.K. thanks minimog.
I thought the propshafts were kinda big. I was probably looking as the torque tubes. I'm pretty sure it was a unimog, as it had a mercedes engine.
Any particular parts I should take pictures of to identify which model it is?
I'll get pictures at the weekend.

axels (404 and early 411 had 1 piece casings)later 411 and bigger mogs had clamshell 3 piece axels
engine
gearbox
chassis
but general pics can give clues to some models
its most likely if its a long chassis thats curved where the gearbox is a 404
if its a straight c section chassis could be 411/421

Hey fella - if its a 404 it would look something like this? Like Minimog says there ar'nt many wily farmers who dont know what they are worth and unfortunatly there are a lot of "axle grabbers" who break them up just for the portals! That was the fate of these two and as you can see these chassis had a lot of life left!

Thanks guys,
Those pictures look like what I saw turnip.
I was looking for info on the web last night and read that the 404S was the only mog to have a petrol engine. The one I saw had a petrol engine.
So assuming it's the original engine it must be a 404. Does the 'S' simply mean that it's a petrol? or are there other differences?
What about spares availablity?
Thanks again all
