Looks bloody beautiful Jon, I find myself trying to think of a reason for me to have one, just so I have an excuse for building it :p

Where did you get the storage boxes from and how much were they?

Just the job, I've been looking for a tool box and wetsuit storage box I can leave bolted to the roofrack Smile Thanks mate.

So you couldn't use that tent if you wanted it roof mounted on a 110 then? Standard roof height must be around 1850mm with no rack fitted. Seems a bit odd.
It will also mean that you would loose all your rear view from the car if you mount it on a trailer with the underside at 1700mm Confused
What tent is it? I must be missing something.

I've bolted the tent on permanently now as well as completing a few small jobs like foam lining the fridge drawer and replacing the non-stainless bolts I had to use in a couple of places.

Still not sorted jerry can holders and after playing with some ally angle I've almost decided to make them from steel instead, lot less hassle just heavier and not quite as pretty! Now that the tent is in the final position I know my calculations about weight distribution are just about right.
Apx 60 kg of liquid right at the front of the body will give it about 50kg of nose weight Smile

I've sourced all the quick release LPG fittings and just got to get enthusiastic enough to plumb it next week sometime.

As my wife is getting itchy feet I thought i'd pacify her with a pitching test in the sun today. It took no more than 15 mins to get everything set up and even less to pack it away again after taking some pics. Much better than pitching a frame tent Very Happy

I have been following this with immense interest and must congratulate you on a seriously super job.

I understand the trials you've gone through as I'm currently building one too. It's near completion, but as I've never managed to work out how to put photos on this site I'll have to shove them in photobucket for all to see!

My lid has toolboxes boltod on to the side, above the mudguards, and is removable (with captive nuts built in to the four corner posts). This gives the option of using the trailer for other stuff too - tip run, log collecting etc. However, I'm thinking of making it hinged instead. Did you also consider this option? I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

I was fortunate enough to be able to just order an axle with the stud pattern I required (6 on 140 to match my Shogun - same as yours?). It's unbraked and is a bit of a prototype. If it goes well I might even build a braked version and market it!! Shocked

PS. Bet you're pleased you did the graphics now!

Thanks for the comments Trailerguy, I wondered when you'd show up again Very Happy Very Happy

I can't remember the stud pattern tonight, it's been a long day, but certainly jap 6 stud. Shoguns have a bigger centre bore I think which works in my favour for swapping wheels onto the car.

I've still got a Toyota emblem to go in between the decals and yes I'm well happy. £5 well spent Cool

I dismissed a hinged or lift off lid before I started building, for a couple of reasons and both personal choice.
I thought that it would be too heavy to open easily when the tent etc was fitted and still wouldn't give good access to the stuff inside. You certainly couldn't use it when the tent was "pitched" Wink
I also wanted to make everything as water tight as possible so the least amount of doors the better, also less rattling from hinges etc.

I'm fortunate that I don't need to use the trailer for anything other than hols as I can use my Trooper van or work car for junk runs & stuff. I see where you're coming from though. I would probably have gone modular and had the top de-mountable, just to make more work for myself Laughing I'd probably try for a ro-ro system so I could wheel the complete top into the garage and then hoist it to the ceiling out the way.

Why didn't you go braked when you were getting the axle sorted? I know it shouldn't get anywhere near to 750kg as a Trek Trailer but won't it limit you for the future?

Definitely boxes above the arches is a good idea, just like a lot of the professional built trailers. Store the cooker etc for easy access. Just means you can't open the tent above it though which has stopped me doing that.

Upload your pics to photobucket and you generate the img file there, simple right click copy & paste straight into the body of your post. I'd love to see more pics of another build.

cheers jonkem, i'll give the pic's a go.

see what you mean about tent position versus boxes over mudguards - only a slight fire risk! Though if I put a tent on top (which is part of the plan) then I could off set it, ensuring the overhang went over the 'non cooking' toolbox (if you get what I mean?!...). Still might make access slightly awkward. Dunno. Too much thinking, have to be design and build!

May not put tent on - may use for kayaks / cycles. Aargh, decisions!

Will have a go at pic's and would appreciate your insight. All the best.

Now you see the real problems with the tent location Laughing Laughing Laughing

Realistically you need to keep it right away from the cooker, even if it's offset to the side and upwards, the potential is still there. If the trailer body is long enough there should be room though but i'd think at least 300mm gap between burner and side wall of tent.

I've pretty much decided that mine will be on a stand between the trailer body and the car bumper, moved under the awning if it's dodgy weather, on a long quick release gas hose. The other option is a fold down or removable shelf to stand the burner on, pivoted from the front trailer corner. Overengineering the solution a bit though Very Happy

My car is way too high for the tent to be on the roof. It would end up with a top height of 2.5mtr so it'd probably roll if it climbed a kerb Shocked

Definitely get the pics up though Wink

Jonkem
What an excellent build!

I have just bought a SIII Sankey trailer with the disc brakes, but with a very heavy triangular shaped metal body.
My plan is to make an expedition trailer out of it but I don't have your welding skills nor equipment. I am planning to build the body from bonded board and ally angle riveted and glued together.
Lots to plan, like where to fit the fridge, water tanks etc.
Where did you get the runners for the fridge drawer? - they look very good.
Did you buy a caravan electric distribution board? - I am thinking of one to allow us to hook-up & charge at home or at a site.

I too wish to use 6 stud Mitsubishi 16" wheels, so will be checking the hubs to see what I can do.

Will update this forum when I get round to doing the work - don't hold your breath!!

Cheers mate, I'm pretty happy with it, just need to get it finished Laughing

Drawer runners...I don't pay for them Wink but I think you can buy them in B&Q Warehouses. Full extension runners with bearings in available in different lengths.

I think some of the bonded boards would be suitable, can't remember the name of the stuff but you would need the thin stuff to keep the weight down. Good adhesive and rivets works well and is the chosen method for lots of commercial vehicles & trailers. Just needs good attention where you join angles to make sure you get enough strength into it. Might be a little tricky?

I can't think why you wouldn't try to MIG. I'ts pretty much point and squirt with decent metal and machines can be had for not a lot anymore. Another string to your bow as well!

I've wired all the electrics myself, nothings very complicated if you've done a bit. I don't think that I'll ever need a mains hook-up as I'm pretty self contained. Those caravan style rcd units are very pricey considering it's just rcd protected sockets with a bit of arctic flex, but easy to sort if you're unsure of the wiring.

My charging is all taken care of by the Cruiser, big output alternator and main disconnect when the trailers laid-up. Proper leisure battery will tak ethe abuse of time between charges and deep discharging etc.

Good luck with the hubs and just shout if you want me to ask about getting the same firm to make another set like mine.

Nearly right, it's Beeston NOT Sandy, we are a bit particular about the distinction despite Royal Mails best efforts Evil or Very Mad Laughing

Terry HAS left his lights up for a few years, probably took sooooooo long to nail them all up he can't face taking them down again, but, each to his own Wink smashing bloke BTW.

I've been asked about making more but honestly there is so much to it, it'd become a full time job and I've already got one of them...but it would be interesting to see what one would sell for Laughing

Disco commercial, 90 soft top, challenge 90, Amazon, 110 pick-up with Hiab and the list goes on!

Often see you tinkering in your garage, thought of popping in and asking what you do with the frontera but parking was always an issue!

Layby in front of the christmas lights, they don't mind Laughing Laughing Laughing

Fronty was handed done to my son quite a while ago and was used in a year of comp overseas (5th overall!). Getting a bit tired now so probably needs pensioning or another 2.8 dropping in.

Right, better get back on topic, drop in if you see me working outside & you can always send a PM.

OK, I got my hitch lock back from powder coating today and will post some pics tomorrow. Quite simple to make and means that the only way anyone else could hitch it to a Nato would be after making a bit of noise with a disc cutter! Cost me no more than £15 as I had the metal already and then £22 for the Kasp lock.

LPG is now plumbed through to the front using 8mm copper and some quick release fitttings. Pics to follow! I've got enough high pressure hose for an extension so I can use the cooker in the intended place or under the awning in bad weather.

Water jerry can holders are off with the powder coaters and fingers crossed the fuel can holders will be made this weekend but it's prooving a bit tricky to borrow a TIG at the moment and I desperately want to make them out of Ally and save any more powder coating expense Crying or Very sad

As promised here are a couple of pics of the hitch lock I made and one of the front gas outlet.

As all the plumbing is under the chassis there isn't a lot to see of the LPG system. This is the only visible part which sits at the junction between the drawbar and front chassis crossmember. The other end is plumbed directly to the storage box that holds the gas bottles.

This is the completed hitch lock in place and locked. I don't know quite what happened but somewhere between measuring and drawing for laser cutting, it lost 10mm in diameter. Still works perfectly but would have been snugger with the extra girth.

These are the componenets of the hitch lock. All made from 10mm steel plate, welded and then etched, zinc'd & powder coated. The inner discs stop the lock moving round in the hitch and the top and bottom plates are identical. The cutout in the plates would have fitted upto the area where the hitch becomes the drawbar if it had the extra 10mm!

Still waiting to get tigging for the fuel jerry can holders, we're all a bit busy with work at the moment so catching a couple of hours off at the same time is prooving difficult.

I have finished the water jerry can holders and fitted them as soon as they came back from powder coating. Identical 20L Scepter cans on each side of the trailer with identical carriers.

The retaining strap comes off completely once unlocked so no problem in utilising the space in front of the front doors.

The base of the holder is ally angle, cut and perforated, with a steel band inside forming a socket for the can to slide into. The base and inside ring are lined with foam.

Simple over-centre fastening with padlock keeps it all tightly held down. I bent the side straps to do 2 jobs, holding the can from sideways movement and also to cover the lid & vent of the can.

Hi jonkem

very, very impressive work. Really nice set up too. Whole thing looks fantastic.

I am not nearly as skilled as you, (I mean it, i´m not fishing for compliments) but please see a photo of my self build. Concept is different to yours, thought you may find it interesting.

Just dug this thread out. I do like JMPCs, but a little big to take off road ?

Anyway I am planning my build (a slow one). I have a Mk3 sankey, but I plan to change the body for a land rover 110 Hi-Cap rear body, giving about 6 foot length inside (so I can sleep in it). By adding a truckman top it will be water proof.

Some good ideas in this thread aswell. Anyway how do the hub adaptors fit on? Also did the place save the drawings of them to be able to make more Wink ?

Paul
