hi dudes,
your thoughts are needed on the subject of power steering i.e hydro assist or full hydro
my understanding is that full hyro is illegal on the road,on anything other than agricutural
also is hysro assist any safer because of retaining the mechical link i.e the pitman arm

My understanding is the same as yours on all of the above points.
I'm thinking along the lines of using a 1970's esc tractor hydro assist system.

UK.
A 1970's era tractor's power steering setup using the hydro assist parts.
There's a steering box, a dual action ram which connects to the trackrod and you'll need a power steering pump attached somewhere. Very simple system and would bolt on pretty much anything with a beam axle.
After the 70's early 80's tractors went full hydro, so before then and after the late 50's they used a hydro assist system. Simple, cheap, reliable, and powerful enough to turn, um, tractor tyres.
It's the route I've been thinking about taking. Any power steering system of any vehicle can be made to fit, depends on how much time and effort you want to put into something.

I've been thinking about power steering for some time, I have heard a few people talk about full hydo being illegal??, but I would love to know if this is true or a bit of a myth?? Full hydraulic steering must be safe, or it would never be used on tractors, construction vehicles, forklifts etc etc?
As for hydo assist, this also a good idea for reto-fitting onto older trucks, this company supply kits for old tractors

thank you mike 97,
i thought all i was going to get from this post was sarkey rolley eyed smileys,
this was one of the ways i was told about today, it seems that the rams have a special valve in them that feels the direction turn from the steering wheel then assists through the use of hydraulics, good price too as a second hand one is in ebay at mo for £200 ish so i have been told
it doesnt seem that there is much interest in this post at the mo,
my thoughts on full hydro are that if you burst a pipe you would have no steering at all, so this cant be good.
hydro assist, you have drilled and taped pipes to a power steering box (landrover) and sent pipes to a ram, if you burst a pipe will you loose all steering or will the mechanical link still steer, what do you think.
thank you david

Well, I've been working on tractors and plant for years and it rare for a pipe to busrt, this only happens when pipes are exposed and get damaged. Normally you get a leak first which give you time to get it fixed before you loose steering.
If you fit an assist ram with your land rover box, then IF you damage a pipe/ loose oil you can still steer due to a mechanical link, this is the case for all cars really.

I believe you are going to fail any MOT with full hydro on anything other than AG registered.
From a common sense point of view I would not want to be driving anything faster than typical AG speeds with full hydro in case of failure, whether it be a hose or seal etc.It may be that failures are rare, but the consequences of that failure could be devastating.
This was one of the reasons most AG stuff is forbidden from motorways and has tough speed limits in force( as well as no suspension etc)
Just my tuppence and it may all be b@llocks.
