There used to be a company called Harris and Miners that used to run between Devon/Cornwall to Scotland. It then went to Bryan Harris Transport, i know he gave the transport side up but still organises loads between devon cornwall and scotland.Haven't got any contact numbers for you sorry but someone in your area is sure to of heard of him.I think he comes from Bovey Tracey but not sure.
sorry i can't be more help.

Should I have made this a topic in it's own right, do you think it will invoke that much comment Donk?

id put it down to luck rather than being legal prob a good job non was vosa you might of been in a different situation
by the way how far did you have to go because acording to ma benz these dont like to be flat towed long distances above 30mph

A 404 has a splash feed gearbox iirc, so towing isn't a brilliant idea unless the engine is runnine. Or disconnect both torque tubes and props.
Think it's something like 25 mph for no more than 25 miles if it's a straight tow.

No issues with towing with a soild bar in a recovery situation. the mog is less that the maximum tow weight of a disco (3K?) and recovery had different legistlations doesn't it?

Breakdowns, Towing
In the event that you need to tow a Unimog 404 that has a dead engine, the manual recommends this procedure in order to avoid damaging the transmission:
1. Engage 2nd gear
2. Select neutral on forward/reverse lever
3. Do not exceed 25 mph (40 km/h)
4. Check gearbox for overheating on long-distance tows
It only weighs 2.7 ton the extra load was about 300Kg's it was insured and had a driver onboard operating the brakes as well as having a trailer board for the lighting requirements. It was a solid bar too, Am I missing something?

3500Kg
Distance was approximately 7 miles. If I had put it on a trailer I would have been far closer to the all up weight and it would have been far less fun lol. Mog brakes could stall out the Disco in 1st, I was amazed lol!

Upto 20 miles on a solid bar for recovery
Though disco's were only 3500 with the tow pack?

I think the trade plates made them even more dis-interested.
I have no qualms from a legality perspective. Not sure I would want to subject the 'Mog to it to much though, overheating gearbox and hubs.
That said I might need to recover it to my Twist-off event at Crook Carnival, County Durham next Saturday and then to Herrington Woods on the Sunday lol

Hope the Fergi was on white then!! My mog came on the back of an ex AA tilt and slide - looked pretty top heavy to me, but the driver seemed cool about it..........

Hi westcoastlandy.
There is a website called shiply.com or something like that.
BAsically you place an ad with what you want moved and where to and then companies will bid for the jobs. I never tried it myself, but heard it can be very cheap as some companies may be returning to your destination with an empty trailer.
Lovely mog by the way, is it for work or pleasure?

Might be worth contacting a haulage company local'ish to you, they might have a low-laoder coming back from the south empty and would be willing to divert and pick up the mog for a couple of hundred quid
Nice Mog btw, god i love these!

I made this tow last year. It was running right at legal limits in California and Mexico. It was a 150 mile tow thru remote mountains...
Read the labels on all of the components from tires to hitch to brakes... the actual ratings often differ from the general notes for the different systems.
I had no issues on the tow but I would recommend a more stout tow rig

That looks like the SRT? 6.1 V8 under the bonnet.
Manufacturers tow limit is 1725Kg braked.
I'd guess that you've 3500 behind you
looking at the trailer design, that appears to be a 2000kg gross little transporter trailer.
A 404.1 is 2600 > 2900, no idea what a doka is.
You sure you were legal? In the US they have far more stringent towing regulations that in the UK.
