Everyone knows how good Unimogs are especially driving over large rocks but what I'd like to know is this............Is the suspension modified or are most Unimogs able to be used competitively in standard trim?

not all mogs are great over rocks it all depends on the wheel base
the main benifit of the mog is the clearance under the axel(my mogs on 35" tall tyre yet i have 18" clerance under the center of the diff on a standard axeled 4x4 you would have to be on 38"+ to gain the same)
mines great in mud due to the very short wheelbase (67" a suzuki sj has a 80" to put it into perspective)
but a 404 has a similar wheelbase to a 110 landy
as for being used competivley theres a lot being used in europe and the states its all down to what your thinking of doing

How suitable the standard suspension is will depend a lot on the competition in question and how competitive you in tend to be. Unimogs are designed to be utility vehicles, so the standard suspesnion may not be ideal for competitions, but it may still be reasonable starting point which can be developed.

my 404 on 10.5r20's (37") can do things my jeep (6.5" over stock on 33 simex) wouldn't be able to touch. The mog is transmission is completely stock bar the engine and I've yet to take the mog out in anger.
I've a set of 12.00r20's (44") which I'm going to be fitting shortly and that should make a huge difference.
A mog does need weight over the back end to get it to stick though. The chassis also flexes which is part of the suspension set up (upto 20 degrees isn't it??) My 404 has a wheel base of 114 inches IIRC.
As for being competative, what kinda competition? They are very tall. The door bottom is about my chest height and the 404's offer very little protection, a cage is a must. The are heavy. Caged up and set up with winches they will be well over 3 tonne for a 404 - for a later mog add a tonne or more to that. If it's a winch challange truck your looking for, there's probably better options. If it's for rock crawling or mud runs, then you'll be pushed to find a better stock vehicle.
Massive ground clearance, exceptionally strong axles, front and rear diff locks, quite often on board PTO's and hydraulics for winches, torque tube coil sprung suspension, large tyres.
411's look to be great fun, and as minimog says, they are tiny. I wouldn't fancy doing many road miles in one though. The larger mogs are formidiable trucks, but probably too big for much full on offroading?. The 404's are under powered with the stock 2.2.
just my £0.02 though.
