|

My 1.3 (1993) samurai (with no engine mods i.e. standard carb etc) picked up an odd engine noise. It's a metallic tapping.
It makes the noise moving as well as standing, with the clutch engaged, as well as disengaged. This rules out (I believe) the props and transmission as well as the wheel bearings (of which i originally thought it was, but on closer inspection was not).
The tapping gets faster when the engine gets faster.
At about the same time as the tapping started the engine oil light was flicking on and off......
I'm not sure how to rule anything else out.
oh and oddly when standing the sound appears to come from directly in front but while moving comes from the passenger side. with the bonnet open the sound definitely comes from the passenger side of the engine bay and towards the front.
sorry for the essay trying to give as much info as possible.

Hi Sam
It sounds to me that your tappets need re-setting and the fact that the oil was getting low will only make it sound louder and it'll get faster with the engine revs.
Most Suzuki's sound tappety due to their age and the usual wear and tear.
Cheers
Paul

Sounds to me like it could be an exhaust blow. Maybe from where the manifold meets the downpipe or the manifold gasket, maybe even a bolt come lose/out?

It has more than likely picked up on one or more cam journals (usually the front one) , the noise can be easily be mistaken as tappets out of adjustment.

Another thing to look out for is the valve cam saddle retaining screws can work loose and bounce about inside the rocker cover, until they find a resting place, usually in an oilway. I have had the rocker cover off two SJ engines so far and on each occasion found a couple of screw adrift.
Spookily enough, on the older engine, the cylinder that had the most wear was the one where the screw had ended up restricting the oilway.

wow ok thanks. been busy all week so not checked all this out yet.
(get ready for some engine novice questions)
1) whats a cam journal and how do i go about repairing it?
2) whats a valve cam saddle retaining screw and where should one be located if i am missing it?
3) still not 100% sure i know what a tappet is? but i have found it in the haynes manual named a valve adjustment screw!
ok next thing?
i had no choice but to run the car to get to work and as a result it appears to be getting louder. more worryingly is the amount of smoke it is now chucking out the exhaust (grey not blue) even after it's warmed up it's still smoking alot which it has never done before (smoking on start up till warm is natural for my car, but always stopped when warm)
i know it will be expensive to get it sorted at a garage so need to do this myself to save on cost.
regards
sam

Its more expensive not to get it fixed.
& sorry,
but with your knowledge of engines,
i think you need help this time
Have you no local 4x4 club, or even a boy racer localy that has a little understanding of engine components? That could give some assistance.
for the future read up lots, internet car repairs, & magazines like 'practical mechanics'
& possibly get along to an evening class or something on 'basic car maintance' which will at least make you familiar with an automobile engine and its workings.
all the best. george

That's why i posted on here.
Don't get me wrong my engine knowledge is shocking but once i get pointed in the right direction i can go from there with no problems (well time will tell).

sam

Sam,
Your engine knowledge is about where mine was four years ago. I only learned by getting stuck in with the aid of the Haynes book (Local hospice shop £1.50) and the pdf manual downloaded from here. Mine, however, is not my daily driver, so any clock-ups or gaps in knowledge have not been the end of the world.
IMHO, it would not do any harm to whip the rocker cover off, bearing in mind that you will need a new cork gasket to refit it and have a look at what is going on, using a good inspection lamp. You have less to lose than if you let the engine keep deteriorating at the rate it is. It is always handy to have an experienced engine guy looking over your shoulder though.

Here you go Sam. I just happened to have a cylinder head lying around in the study - honest, it is on route from the shed to the garage!
BTW, the head is up for sale in the classifieds. It is skimmed and ready to fit. I didn't do the valve stem seals because it did not smoke on the truck it came off.

Is there anyone down Sams way that could have a look with him this weekend? I quite fancy towing the tin snail down to the coast but I am working.
BTW, our nephew lives in Poole. We sometimes stay near Wareham.

Not sure on the Part No of the gasket. Mine came with the head kit I bought.
Sods law says that you have a problem with your truck just as the forum goes quiet for the Summer Hols.
Is the truck using excessive oil? Just a bit mystified by the grey smoke. Is it dark grey or light grey? The oil pressure light flickering may be a clue. You won't know until you get that rocker cover off. I have been lucky enough to remove the rocker cover, without damaging the gasket but the law of Murphy says you will break it if you don't have a spare! Any good motor factors should be able to get the gasket for you.

yeah sods law haunts me all over the place.
the smoke is light grey, and the car is using excessive oil but have had a good hunt about and found no leaks apart from the oil spitting out this thing mentioned here:
http://forum.difflock.com/viewtopic.php?t=42676
as for the gasket, i will get hold of one through my local motorfactors. not got time to look at it till sunday.
