Hi guys and girls.
Just been offered a pug 106 1.5 diesel. I thought the engine needed to go into something a little more pleasing to the eye but at the moment i wouldn't know where to start.
Has anyone done this as i'm not sure if the engine is the same as anything else.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

hi,
not heard of anyone doing this before but it sounds kinda interesting...i guess all you really need to make sure of is that you have a flywheel/clutch/gearbox combo that you can make attach to the pug engine.
i dunno if there would be a way of making the SJ tranny fit onto it but being a little diesel block i'd imagine it wouldnt be too difficult.
also when people do the 1.9 diesel i've heard its a good idea to uprate the front suspension at least, as those diesels and quite a bit heavier than their petrol equivalents... dont know if that would apply cos the 1.5d can't be that heavy surely???
although now i think about it, i think i've heard stuff about getting a new fuel tank as well?
whereabouts in brighton are you from? i'm only about 12 miles away from the town centre...

these engines came in 1.4 and 1,5 they are fitted to the 106 and the metro not sure about putting it in an off roader as they are not very powerfull and need to be revved to get power out of them would think the effort would be better channelled fitting a 1.9 td pug or 1.7 isuzu engine lots more power and better engines all sound

Hey SID-ZUKEY,
Thanks for the quick reply,
i read your post and from my point of view i cant machine anything as i dont have the equipment and on the island here is not easy to get sorted. i was looking for a bolt together answer really like the izuzu engines and the manta / carleton g/boxes.
can you offer any ideas or alternatives either ????
cheers

the easy bolt on option is the 1.6 8v petrol vit engine,
but if you want a diesel then that are numerous options avaliable which all require different things that need to be sorted,
some convertions you can buy convertion kits for, ie 1.9 wv to sammy g box but there are expensive.
some diesel options
izuzu 1.5 1.5t 1.7 1.7t
pug 1.9
ldv pilot 1.9
vw 1.9
106/cit 1.5
unless you get a convertion kit for the standard g box then there will be fabricating things involved, like props for different gbox, mounts etc...

Cheers Steve.... im not giving up on this engine tho cos it seems to be ideal for what i need it to do. How difficult is is to machine the flywheel - what do they need to remove / modify to make it work?
If its not too much trouble, could you elaborate on the flywheel / clutch bit of the conversion please ? I can always send the flywheel away to be machined if necessary.
Also did i read correctly that there is a template for the sammy gbox to the pug 1.5 engine somewhere on here ??

ok here goes,
i machined fly wheel to suit 190mm sammy clutch (pug is 180) and sammy clutch cover, also drilled tapped and dowled to suit,
i did write down all the measurements and calculations dont no where they are now though,
made up adaptor plate form 3mm steel (took blooming ages to figure it all out)
shame i never made another one for people to copy.
machined gearbox by 7mm to bring thrust bearing closer to clutch.
hope this helps a bit

Thank you all guys for your input.
i think im gonna attempt it if the engine proves to be ok. ( well when i say i, i mean me and my fabricating god friend lol )
ok so please correct me if im wrong but please tell me for the main fab work if this is correct or if i have missed anything:
once i have the engine i need to machine out the pug flywheel from 180 to 190 ( is that the correct way round ??? ) , drill and tap for the SJ clutch, make an adaptor plate for the engine to bell housing and remove 7mm off of the bell housing to bring the bearing nearer the shaft.
then work out plumbing / power steering / engine mounts etc.
out of interest, what did you guys use for mounts ?
cheers....

nearly there,
also machine flywheel down to suit sj clutch,
i only took 7mm off the top half of the gearbox so can but srud gard back on to cover flywheel.
i made my mounts from 6/8mm plate.

Cheers Steve,
So you remember how far down you need to machine the flywheel as well as the 180 / 190 adjustment ?
