Hi,

I've just bought a Disco 2 with twin boot-mounted LPG tanks. When I bought it the last green LED was flashing and so I filled it with LPG, and it took 70 litres. The tanks are 70 litres each, so I'm guessing that only one was filled - but if they are nominally rated at 70 litres, then they don't actually take that, do they? I have unscrewed the airtight cover, and the rear-most tank shows 60-ish litres in it and the other shows 80.

My question is - what is going on? As the last LED was flashing I assumed that they were both empty - but that clearly wasn't the case. Does the LED flash when one tank is empty and then it switches to the other one and all four light up again??

Thanks in advance ...

That's unusual ; I've never seen an LPG tank gauge that reads in litres. Perhaps what you saw was 60% and 80%.
These things can be a bit vague, and it's quite possible that after going over the first bump the other one would say 80% as well.
As you note, 80% of tank capacity is "full" for all practical purposes. So 2 x 70L tanks would take around 110L from dry, but there are variations, especially if the tanks are not installed at just the correct angle.

Nope, its all dumber than that. The tanks just both feed gas when it's on, usually but not always they will empty fairly evenly. But there's a fair chance that one tank will empty before the other. When you fill, first one will stop filling then the other, you may well hear the pump note change or the fill stop valve clatter. It all works better than you might expect this way, BUT ....

Electric level sender is usually only fitted to one tank of two. So it may lie.

Low-tank-level flashing is meant to happen before the tank is actually empty, same as a low petrol tank warning.

Low-tank-level display at the dashboard may mean no sender was fitted, or a wire has fallen off, or the sender is stuck, or the gas controller was set up wrongly or has lost a setting or has had a setting changed, or the float arm is stuck, or that tank really is more or less empty (but the other one may still be half-full) ... and so on.

It's fairly routine for the lights not to be that accurate, and in the case of twin tanks there is even more scope for error.

cheers, Ross K

Thanks - I should add that now, after filling it up, all four LEDs are lit up. Am I best just running it until it runs out of gas, and then I'll know whether I've used 55 litres or 110??!!

Ye-es, with a caveat.
Most folk find out how many miles they get to a tank (it seems to be more consistent than you might think) and then zero the trip counter at every fill. You should get around 300 miles.

Caveat - if it is a single-point gas system (hope not) there's a greater risk of backfire as the gas runs out. That's what you get with cheap systems. If it's a more glamorous injection system it should detect loss of fuel and auto-switch to petrol, with some beeps and flashing to tell you. (Don't forget to switch back to gas again after you fill up!)

Thanks very much for the replies; they've helped a lot. I think that as it's a sequential system, I'll let it run out and go from there!

I've done a few miles now and looking at the gauges one reads 25% full and one shows 60%. Is it normal for them to empty at slightly different rates does anyone know please?

take no notice of the gauges, they are all unreliable jus fill it up with gas, zero the trip and run it on gas until it runs out and then you will know how much it does on a fill up.
