For our expedition vehicle I'm looking to fit an uprated Alternator. I think the standard version is 65amp on the 300tdi but the TD5s and some V8s are fitted with 120amps.
Would this be a straight upgrade - I know they will physically fit - Would I need to alter anything else on the electrical side?
Has anyone fitted dual Alternators before? It looks pretty straight forward to utilise the empty air con pulley. (I'm thinking more for backup purposes than power)

Simon,
Looking at my alternator cable I don't think it is big enough to carry 120A continuously. You may need to increase the size cable which runs from the alternator to the starter motor terminal. I guess the easiest way would be to fit a second lead in parallel. If you are using one cable it should have a conductor area of 25mm2, if you are using two cables they should each be 10mm2
Since an alternator is an integrated item, if it fits and is turning it will generate, nothing else is needed.

PS: How do you do a raised 2 (squared) with BBCode?
