Hi, previous topic submitted about buying a freelander advice, but can anyone explain in detail how the 4wd system works???

I understand its a viscous coupling, how reliable/costs if they break etc, what to look for if anything suspect???

Finally been to look at a couple of freeander's advertised as having traction control??????

regards

karen

All Freelanders have TC ABS and hill descent.

Quote:
To make the Freelander handle well the front wheels are driven faster than the rear wheels. To accommodate this difference a Viscous Coupling is fitted in line with the rear prop shaft, which constantly slips. On the earlier Freelander's this ratio difference is to great causing the viscous coupling to be overworked and thus seize solid. Once seized the front wheels fight the back wheels causing transmission wind-up this rapidly accelerates the wear on the rear diff and the IRD unit, which will cause the imminent failure of either/both. Thus be warned if you need to change your diff or your IRD the viscous coupling must also be checked and renewed if necessary to stop the problem.

£800 - £900 to replace

No, they don't, it was an option when I bought mine and there are a lot out there that don't have it. As an option it put the price up by around £2000 at the time. Not sure when/if it became standard fit so it's worth checking.

The 4WD system on Freelanders is a bit of an odd ball one to make it as car like as possible. Basically the IRD (a bit like a transfer box) drives the front wheels faster than the rear to improve handling on the road. To stop transmission wind up it has a viscous coupling in the rear propshaft that constantly slips.

If the VC dies it normally seizes, causing transmission wind up and wearing the IRD out and/or the rear diff.

One side effect of a siezed VC is "saw tooth" wearing of the rear tyres, as well as a visible saw pattern on the tread this causes a droning noise from the rear end at higher speeds, sounds like a wheel bearing or diff bearing has gone.

VCs are around £350, IRDs are £850, rear diffs, £350

Dave,
excellent descrition of the FL system!!

Rear diff's are a bit cheaper than that. Simmonites were doing them exchange for £100 to FL Club members.

Most Freelanders have traction control, as it became standard on all models after about 2001. It means that wheelslip can be controlled without the need for a centre diff lock. (or any difflocks for that matter).
It works quite well on low friction surfaces, like snow or wet grass.
