Hi

If you really want the absolute best fluid for your ZF autobox then synthetic is the way to go for maximum box life, best economy (such as it is with an autobox!) and lowest transmission temperature. If you want the VERY best fluid then you won’t do better than our very own Evolution 1 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil which happens to be perfect for ZF 4 speed autoboxes.

However the ZF 4 speed Automatic box fitted to these vehicles is more than happy with high quality plain mineral ATF fluids such as our Auto Transmission Fluid ATF Type DIII . The latest DIII grade is the one to use since it's formulation is better matched to the latest generation of autoboxes with smaller fluid orifices and electronic controls.

Regular fluid and filter changes will see the box give a very, very long life on plain mineral ATF without the need for Synthetics.

Do remember too that you can only drain around half the fluid out during servicing so any refill with Synthetic will be diluted by around 50% mineral ATF unless you flush several times. Given the cost of synthetic fluids this may be a costly exercise!

However, if you live in hotter climes or if the box is being worked extremely hard (say touring the Alps in Summer!) then a synthetic fluid will significantly reduce the transmission temperature and this is worth the expense alone to avoid an overheated transmission.

You can find a free online guide to servicing your autobox in our online magazine here:

Difflock Guide to servicing the ZF Autobox

If you are doing the job yourself I would urge caution about opening up your autobox outdoors or even in a garage if it has a dusty floor (inc bare, unsealed concrete no matter how clean it looks).

Cleanliness is absolutely essential as far as the boxes innards go and airborne dust particles may be blown onto these parts if outdoors or in a dusty environment. The film of oil on them will make this dust stick and it will find itself circulating inside the box when its all back together and refilled. The valve block within is particularly susceptible to contamination and could give trouble. Hence try and do the job in a garage with a sealed floor if possible and if not, use dust covers to keep down any dust.

Best Regards

Peter

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your input, as Im not doing much in the way of towing Ill stick to the mineral D111 at this stage. I live in Oz and wondering if the Redline Hitemp ATF as recommended on their web site matches the Evo 1 from Difflock. Thanks again.
Steve
