If I was to start brewing my own fuel, I have to consider the cost of the raw material, the equipment cost ( cash down plus running costs ) plus the labour involved.
The last item---labour---must be juggled between what I am saving and what else I could be doing.
To this can be added the legality of the enterprise. How much can I store? How much can I make in a year? Are there any measures I need to take to safeguard my neighbour's property? or my own for that matter.
A roughish estimate suggests that Viv and I use 2000 litres a year. Would making my own be a practical proposition and what savings could I expect to make per year?

Has this idea sprung from my visit?
I know very little about making Bio but as you know I use it when I can get it. I just did a search and found a B100 (Biodiesel) supplier about 10 miles from you: D & B Biofuels Ltd. Might save you the hassle of making it yourself? Or if you still want to DIY they also supply filtered WVO and Im sure if you asked nicely they might supply you with the required chemicals too.
Sorry I cant help more but there are plenty on here who can.

Hi Dave
To an extent, maybe also to see the look on my neighbours faces as they try and figure out why the cruiser smells like a chippy!!!
The other reason is to know what's what. I should at least find out what is involved and whether it would prove to be a viable proposition.
I have made a note as to your suggestion and I will ask them how they sell it. Bidford is an easy 10 or so miles away so when I am in the area, I can pop in for a chat.
Cheers
Roger

It may not have been real bio but "treated" veg oil
Some suppliers have been known to pass is off as bio
Mine normall smells of chips as I run on veg

You need to regard making your own Bio Diesel as a Hobby - its not an easy or quick process
Very labour intensive, messy, smelly and involves dangerous chemicals....

ive been making biodiesel since september last year, total set up was just over £ 1,000 it may sound a lot,but ive only got to make another 250 litres and ive made my money back,i'm lucky in that i don't pay for the waste oil,i've worked it out and it costs me 23p to make 1litre that includes chemicals and electric to run all the equipment,it takes me 3-5 days to make a 150 litre batch but a lot of the time its just settling between processes i use electrical timers so i'm not running in and out the shed all the time, hope this helps.
