Hiya, Ive just got myself a 1995 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Limited for offroading and just wanted to know a little more about them. Its currently had a 2.5" skyjacker lift and running 31" tyres. But things I would like to know are:
How well do the Cherokee's perform offroad?
How strong are the Auto boxes? Is it ok to try and tow people out of ditches or will this ****** things?
Are there any weak points on the the Cherokees in general?
Is it possible to fit an LSD from the rear axle into the front?
The current air intake is just behind the grille, and there was some dry mud in the bottom of the airbox, it is worthwhile fitting a snorkel?
Thanks,
Lawrence

Cherokees perform very well off-road. Your 2.5" lift will improve the break-over angle, but the 31" tyres will reduce the engine braking when going down steep inclines in 1st - unless the R&Ps have been re-geared.
The auto boxes are great, and make things a lot easier in my opinion. You'll have no problem recovering stuck vehicles, as long as your recovery points are sufficiently strong.
Make a point of checking the boot floor and rear footwells for corrosion, as (I believe) they only started galvanising the bodies from the 1997 post-facelift version. Apart from that they tend to go on forever.
Why would you want to fit an LSD to the front? You could fit a locker, I suppose, but I think you'll find yourself surprised at just how off-road capable a Cherry is in standard form - assuming you have a decent set of tyres on it.
It's worth fitting a snorkel if you intend to do a lot of wading. Other than that you could extend the air intake to the back of the engine bay - or just enter water at slow speed and not go any deeper than 18 - 20".
I suggest that you join a dedicated Jeep Forum, as you'll get a lot more feedback that way. I would suggest the following:-
http://www.jeepclub.co.uk - Aimed at those new to Jeeps. Plenty of opportunities to off-road in good company. It'll cost you £30 per year, but you'll recover this by discounted insurance and cheaper entry to off-road meets. You can read the forums for free.
http://www.j33p.org- more hard core. Free to join, but you need to register to post.
http://www.rockznrutz.com- Mainly Midlands based, but members elsewhere too. Free to join, very friendly. You'll need to register before you can read the forums.
http://www.birtydastardsjeepclub.com- Mainly Midlands based. Free to join, like to keep things a bit more serious. You'll need to register before you can read the forums here too.
If you join any of the above, then I'll see you there.

they're great off road!!!
the autos hold up really well, an the yanks seem to think theyre good, mine's holding up to the abuse of 33inch tyres without a problem an its soon gonna take 37's.
as said befor the boot floors between the chassis rail and wheel archs and back towards to the boot lid. also just infront of that check the floor arround the front leaf spring mount. thats where mine's gone through an everywhere else seems fine! oh an mine also formed a hole on the edge of the trans tunnel in the passenger side footwell.
no you can't fit a rear lsd to the front they are different axles altho same make. if you want a locker in the front you'll have to go to the expense of free wheeling hubs or something switchable like an ARB air locker. otherwise buy another type of lsd an you'll get better traction than normal and it won't affect your steering which is a good option also less likely of breaking a shaft like a locker could!!!
also if you sneeze on it, you won't blow a diff like a landrover would!!!
if you tend to go to wet places it is advised but not esential or just keep yourself away from water.
i never thought i needed one till i nearly came close to killing her 3 times on one site an thats with an 8 inch lift an 33inch tyres.
im happier now to go though water an the snorkels proved a great buy an definatly worth the money since ive got stuck in a few obscure ponds.
like said befor if you want to join more forums go for it there's loads of info out there an people are always happy to help!!
an just enjoy.

Woohooo, the thread is fixed thanks to davew I can finally access the thread.
Thanks for the replies, well the Cherokee's sound pretty tough
How well do they go through water once a snorkel has been fitted?
Are there any exposed electrics that need covering up etc? or are they fine as standard?
Thanks,
Lawrence

ive never had any trouble going through water even when it was only a 4inch lift but i was carefull of water at that point with no snorkel.
I also could of just been lucky!
your ECU is at the front of engine bay between the air box and inner wing so it might be advisable to move that like i have. mine's now against the bulkhead as far as the loom would strech with a polly bag round it to at least help if water gets splashed on it, this is untill i make up a loom to move it into the cab.
the dizzy an coil pack did'nt give me any troubly through water but now anyway ive put silicone sealant on the ends off all plug leads and round the base if the dizzy cap.
on the dizzy there's a vent hole with a little hat on it, ive removed the hat an extended the hole up to the back of the engine bay and much higher with some rubber hose.
other than that there's nothing else to worry about i dont think,
except whats at the bottom of the water you want to go through!!!
