|
|
|
Between Christmas and New Year I drove into work. The alley where I was parking my truck was behind a cafe and there was 80L of WVO outside the back door. A quick word with the owner saw me carting it home.
A couple of weeks ago my brother called to let me know that there was 160L for the taking at the pub where he works part time, so off to Oxfordshire for a couple of bitter shandies and to collect it. It was nice to see my middle bruv as well!
The quality of WVO ranges from almost clear, through to cloudy and some with lots of solid lumps.
I spent the afternoon today constructing a shelving system for my filter plant. Three boxes from the local Somerfield at £4.00 and three water butt taps from Homebase at £2.99 each were added to the shelves.
Round to the shed to cut an 8" length of 67mm copper tube from an offcut I had laying about.
The cunning plan is to cut a couple of discs from the sheet of copper on the bench, drill a hole in the centre of each and braze in a lazy coil of microbore copper tube to use as a fuel line.

I have been to the scrappy and obtained a fuel changover solenoid from a Jaguar XJ12. Can anyone see any problems with using it for WVO. In other words, are there any components that are likely to fail when in contact with the WVO?
This is how I intend to get hot water flow through the heat exchanger. I did consider putting it in series with the heater hose but that would mean it would only get water flow when the heater is on. I am wondering whether it will get enough flow with the proposed method of connection?
I'll update as and when I get the heat exchanger made.

will you use a filter or rely on settling?

Phil copper makes WVO go rancid very rapidly.. especially when warm ..
sorry but youll have to go back to the drawing board.
50 % of that WVO in the pictures is FFA and Tallow. itll clog your fuel tankpickup .
the Jag changover is okay but the o rings may contain rubber and the hot veggy will kill em too.
a problem i see with your cascade system is A its cold and B itll take months to settle the oil so depending on your expected quantity
i have 1000 litres cascade and draw off 40 litres a month at -5 dec in the shed. summer is fine but just be aware temp is critical.
check out MAGNESIUM SILICATE might be of some use.

Richard,
I'll be using three stages of filtering. First stage is some nylon mesh (offfcut of caravan insect screen) to catch the big lumps as I pour it into the top box. Followed by sock filters on the first two taps.
Terrence,
What about if I tin the inside of the copper fuel line. I might even be able to get it chromed or some other kind of plating as I have a mate with a small metal plating facility.
I realise that it is going to be temperature dependent. The reason I have made it almost portable is that I might move it to the shed, which has a SW facing roof, so I can have a solar heating element with an indirect coil in the top tank. It is all very much experimental at the moment.
Thanks for the constructive critiscism.

wasnt critiscism at all Phil just hard learned lessons , i thought id save you some time / hassle.
plating the copper will work, dunno how youll do it with soldered joints . maybe braze them?
not really worth it a heat exchanger is 40 quid. in aluminium.
solar heating is good i have a solar tower in the yard and works well in june LOL
an immersion heater is good too.
always cold filter first, saves hassle later.
everone bangs on about heated fuel systms , but unless you have a heated fuel tank your knackered if the CPP oils clog the tank in winter.
diesel off course helps but it defats the point of SVO.
im still experimenting after 12 years and still get it wrong.
every batch of oil is different even had one last week that was 50 % bleach and vinegar you just dinnae know dont be afraid to ask.

A few of the guys on the Surf forum are using these as heat exchangers. http://www.fuelcat.co.uk/faq.html but according to this website http://pigeonsnest.co.uk/stuff/crapstuff/fuelcat.html it is yet another snake oil product.
I think I would prefer an alloy heat exchanger as the truck has an alloy head and block. Thinking about it, I don't want to add copper into the mix and get some electrolytic action going....

heat exchanger here for £49
http://www.biotuning.co.uk/ShopHeatExchangers.htm
Smartveg is a bit too expensive, Diesel veg kits are nice but I hope they've changed the pipework a bit - too many joints for my liking

Stuff for Terrence to make joints with?
I'm not sure if the through connectors on my truck pipework are standard or whether it has had T-Pieces in before. Just seems a bit random to have joints (ooops) in the pipe for no apparent reason.

HAS ANY ONE TRYED YOUSING OIL HEATXCHANGERS OF THE TYPE THAT FITS BETWEEN OIL FILTER AND BLOCK ,AS THE OIL IS A LOT HOTER THAN THE COOLING SYSTEM ,THESE CAN BE HAD FROM BRAKERS CHEAPLY ROUND HERE.

A few people use these attached to a fuel filter head with coolant running through them to make a heated fuel filter.
If heating veg oil with the lubricating oil like you suggest, I would be wary about getting the oil TOO hot for the injection pump internals - I don't know what the upper limit is.

GOOD POINT ABOUT THE HEAT LESS OF A PROBLEM FOR ME , I PUMP MY FUEL TO A HEADER FRON WITCH THE INJECTION PUMP DRAWS ITS FUEL THROUGH THE FILTER .AN EFI PUMP FEEDS THE FUEL AT HIGH VOLUME MOST RETURNING TO THE TANK HEATING THE TANK. THE HEADER HAS CAN BE PRIMED WITH DIESEL FOR COLD START WHEN NEEDED HAVE LEVEL SWITCH SO MAIN PUMP CAN BE CUT FOR WORM UP THEN CUTS IN BEFOR HEADER EMPTYS , HEADER APROX 2L .
