|
|
|
Any one got any instructions on slicing a kerr rope?
My one got damaged about 1500 from one end as it got trapped and two strands are cut. I have ordered a new one for offroading but would like to keep this one in the back of the road motor for the snow and breakdowns etc.
Even better if someone local can do it for beer tokens!

As long as the damaged section is removed and the rest of the rope is OK, there is no reason why a KERR cannot be re-spliced but it must be done by an expert in 8 strand plaited ropes.

I could never get my head around splicing a rope and having a look at my KERR just confirms that.
If you are close to Aberdeen Docks, find yourself a friendly ( ooh you naughty boy ) sailor.

I can splice rope (it's realy easy honest) but life is too short to be messing about tring to back splice octiplait, because it is 8 strand you need to splice all 8 strands 8 times (one complete level of splice for each strand of the rope if that makes sence) & it's plaited not laid so it's a ninghtmare to keep track of. theres nothing wrong with splicing the undamaged bits, it's just to much trouble for me.

I cant blame you, splicing is a pain in the ass and anything more than three strands is a serious mind fcuk

Tie a clove hitch to a shackle and reduce the rope Working Load Limit by 20%.
Most people over size the winch that they actually need anyway. Unless you are into winching competions and need the speed.

If the rope snapped under full load at the repair point,it would contain far less energy than some of the dramatic pictures of metallic failure when using a KERR.That said, given the price of them, bin it and buy another.

Some people are missing the point here.
If the damaged section is cut off and scrapped and the remainder is physically ok, then splicing a new loop onto the rope will give the owner a perfectly sound and useable rope.
He has already stated that he has another KERR and that this re-spliced one would be used for more general duties, such as towing.

I can splice 3 strand in my sleep but 8 strand is another matter
If it is only for light dutys then a bowline will be fine or you can do a whipped eye. both of which are strong enough for light use.
I'll take to a mate at work if i remember who is far better at rope work then myself. Or if you fancy a giggle get some cheapo 3 strand poly crap and practice 3 strand splicing and then have a go at your Kerr which is probably way too long to be a legal towrope anyway.
And for those that doudt the strength of a splice they are regularly used on supertankers for tying up so plenty strong enough

I spliced my first kerr from marlow 8 plait over 25 years ago, before all the toy shops started selling them, I used to work as a yacht rigger so getting the rope from the rep was easy, it is a bit of a ****** to get your head around, and I was splicing rope for a living! You will need, in addition to the diagram of the splice, a good hot knife, some thin whipping twine to keep the strands organised, and a fid which is a sort of hollow marline spike, dont even attempt it without one!!

Nothing wrong with that splice and you have the satisfaction of knowing that you did it yourself.

Thanks guys, the first hour was spent trying to understand the drawing but i gave up, then i spent another hour studying the other end and then an hour to copy it! Once you get going its actually quite easy, only problem is its very short now at about 4m!

Thats the perfect length for a tow rope though (4m is the maximum legal length iirc).
Ive been splicing ropes since I was about 10. Ive only really done 2 strand and I think Id have a headache working out 8 strand plait! Im impressed, well done!

As a first splice I would give that 10/10
