My disco 1 (300) 3.9V8 is having an issue when on petrol she runs great but a bit of a pain when first started meaning the revs jump around a we bit then some times drop off and stall out the engine.
On Gas it seems to loose power at higher speeds above 40 but 20 to 30 not to bad. you can put your foot down watch the revs go up but no increase in speed .
One thing I have noticed is the cat on the drivers side of the motor is rattling and a bit clunky so I am wondering if the cat is causing a bit of back pressure to the engine and on gas it is having problems but on petrol it has the power to over come the cat issue.
when you turn from gas to petrol its like you hit a boost button

It certainly won't help. If you have a mixer-type system (you didn't bother telling us) then it does rely on through-flow of air to get correct fuelling. The petrol injection system just dollops in fuel regardless, so its more likely to get some kind of flammable mixture into the cylinders, and more likely to still ignite even when the mixture is wrong.
The gas may be generally out of sorts anyway, who knows the last time you had it serviced or set up (settings do drift, filters need changing) but no point persuing that till you have fixed the known problem and see what's left.
cheers, Ross K

You may find that ther is a build up of tar in the vapariser this comes from out of the gas .On forklift i have seen them chocked to the point were the engine will not run above tickover on load ,If striped you should fit new seals and have it checked for leaks.Hope this helps. I run my unimog on lpg with no problems ,if all parts sized corectly petrol can be discarded. THIS IS MY GAS MIXER REPLASING PETROL COMPLETLY.

It was running great till about a week after the cat started to rattle and clank
I have another cat to fit on Monday.
So I will see what happens after that.
