I had a week at the bottom of Western Australia last week in a town called Esperance. Its about 700-800 klms south of Perth where I live.
I got out and did a bit of beach driving a and climbed up some steep rocks for some great views of the bays in the Southern Ocean.
The diesel 6 performed briliantly ,whether on the highway in 5th or crawling up steep rocks in 1st gear low range.

LOL No its summer down here and was over a 100F the day before with thunderstorms. Those are sandhills but Im not sure whats happened to the vegtatation.
Its been officially certified as the whitest beach sand in oz and among the top 10 beaches here.

There wasnt a lot of swimming going on as a young lad was attacked a couple of days before by a 20 ft white pointer and lost a leg and had the other one mangled

One of the great things about this place is that 4x4 are welcome on the beaches and in the national parks providing you obey the rules which are not too restrictive

The bay has a 105 islands in it wih all being wildlife reserves. Most off them are less than half a klm long.

I visited this one for a few hours

Great pics everyone. I'm looking forward to the pics of the camper conversion Ross. Will it be an 'off the shelf' or build it yourself?

Its still in the pipeline but it will be an off the shelf very similar to these.

The ones in the link are for tradesman but a few companies are now realising the potential as a camper if you add a pop up roof.
The one I want doesnt have a website, the owner is a bit old fashioned Very Happy

I happen to know the area and have made 3 trips down there so far. The most recent was Jan 2006

We liked our campsite with the view of Whoogerup range over the Hammersley inlet.

Yeah that last pic shows the minutes before a huge storm came through. We got a full 2mm of rain in the next 48 hrs and the thermometer dropped to a teeth-chattering 25 Celsius during the night.

Then again I guess you have to expect that sort of cold, miserable weather on Australia's south coast. If you want nice weather you go north.

Here we are in Kalbarri, (a little north of Perth, Western Australia) in the middle of winter 2005.

Maybe it is. I still consider it to be close enough to go for a few days camping. The drive takes me about 8 hrs (longer if you are driving in convoy), and I've done the whole trip in the dark a few times. No worse than going to Esperance.

I don't think I could handle living somewhere that you couldn't drive in a straight line for more than 2 days. I'd feel cramped.
