If you don't mind 10-12 mpg then I would say definitely get the 4ltr auto as they are sublime. The facelifted Cherokees from 97-01 are much more pleasant inside but you need to make a decision on what you want. If you intend to lift it and off-road then a 97-99 is best as it has the high pinion front axle but the 00 & 01 models have the distributorless ignition system that requires no maintenance except spark plugs and also doesn't have the silly exhaust manifold that cracks regularly. You can always get the later models and swap the front axle for a high pinion version(I have a couple spare lying on the driveway) that way you get the newest possible XJ Cherokee. Just beware though that the vey latest ones registered from march 01 onwards will fall into the emmisions based tax bracket so rather than £185/year you might get stung for the proposed £400-600.

There are not really any common faults other than poor maintenance, remember they were making them from the early 80's so had a good long run to get it right by the end of the 90's.

Have a look at the older Grand Cherokees too they were higher spec, LSD as standard and more toys. They also had coils springs all round were as the older cherokees were cart springs. definately the auto makes a comfortable tow car.

Hope it helps
