I am fairly new to the UK. Is it just me, or are super-swampers simply not available here? I was looking to put a new set of Iroks on my Mog, but I can not find them for sale anywhere here. What gives?
Short of finding the tyres I want, I am not thrilled with the options available for 20" wheels. Does anyone know of a supplier here in the UK that can make a set of 16.5" wheels for a 6 lug Mog?
cheers,
Dan

You can get interco tyres over here... www.devon4x4.co.uk they might not have the right size listed but they would be able to get you a set .

hello and welcome to the forum
to answer your question you can get them imported but at a cost and the 16.5 wheels where mainly used on comercial 7.5 ton trucks
your best bet could be portal rover
as for tyres the bigger sizes are becoming the norm in the states so they will be here soon

I can build you a set of rims, non bead-lock/single and double bead-lock. Are you planning a disk conversion? If so you may want to hold on the wheels/tires as you'll then be able to fit 16" rims and your range of tires avaliable is far greater.

I would definitely be interested in talking to you about having a set of rims made up. Currently I am not planning on converting to disc brakes. Honestly I use the truck all the time, not just to play in the mud, so I like the massive drums that it has. If I was in mud every single day I could see the conversion being worthwhile, but for now, I am still unconvinced. I like the big drums and availability of stock parts. Devon 4x4 did say they could get me a set of 39.5" Interco Iroks in that fit my 20" wheels. But I am still curious at the possibility of a set of 16.5" rims. I am a die hard fan of Interco/Super Swampers. The 16.5s would give me tons of options. The biggest benefit is that I can get Boggers for 16.5s but they dont have them for my 20" wheels. A pair of boggers onthe back, and Iroks on the front all mounted on 16.5s would be the hot ticket for me. Let me know what you charge for a full set!
cheers,
Dan

16.5 inch diameter wheels was very popular in the States until they started to use european sized wheels a few years ago. Most if not all of their popular pickups used that size.

Exactly. That is the main reason I want to go with 16.5s. Eventually the Mog is going to end up in the US. When it does, the vast majority of full size truck tyres (especially anything around the 40" tall range) are either 15" or 16.5" The selection of 16.5" tyres available stateside is staggering.

A thought for you. When people i know in the US Forces go back Stateside they have to take European tyres off and put American made tyres back on to their vehicles so that when they get home they can drive them on American highways. Probably won't affect your Unimog but it's a thought.

And conversly, how do the American tyres fit in with not being E marked?
Will they be weight rated sufficiently for the Mog,even if it is a smaller one?

The unladen weight for my 404 is 2900 K. That is actually just a little less than my last full size Chevy truck that I had. So I think as far as weight ratings go, the Super Swampers should be just fine.
As far as the E mark goes, well the vehicle is registered as a tractor and I doubt many of the chevron pattern Agricultural tyres are marked for highway use, and that is saying someone would actually pull me over for a check of the tyres. The Unimog falls into such an odd category here that after finally managing to get it registered I do expect a few headaches to arise. I will just have to deal with them as they come up.
I think the tyres will work brilliantly. If I can get the 16.5" wheels made and run 18/39.5-16.5 Boggers on the rear, and 39.5/13.50-16.6 Iroks on the front, it should be a mud monster, but still not break my arms trying to steer it.

That sounds like it should be ideal!
Many of the bar tread agri tyres are highway rated,in fact I doubt any would be allowed for sale in the UK without CE approval. The crux with a Mog is to make sure thay are suitably speed rated for the bigger trucks.I've been wary of this pitfall with my U1000.Mine too is registered as an agricultural vehicle. As you've said, the chances of you getting a regular pull and it coming to light are minimal. However, if you did have a suitable accident, you can rest assured they would inspect your vehicle like you'd never dreamed possible.
It sounds like I'm being a killjoy, but please be assured that's not the case,I'm just airing a few thoughts.
Good luck with it all.

i would keep to 20" rims due to when you let the presure down on 16" rims you wont have much ground clearance , them mud bogger tyres flat spot overnight ,and are too soft for the road wont last and dont grip on side slopes due to the tred pattern in line .

I am not sure whether 16” or 16.5” rims will fit around the standard 404 drums. I am pretty sure they’ll fit with a 17” rim but as you’ve already said the interco tyres don’t come in a 17” rim size. I don’t know whether you can make a 16.5” rim offset enough to clear the drums but even if you can it would make the mog stupidly wide.
