personally I think autos all the way! for extreme off roading I just hold my left foot on the brake, right foot on the throttle and allows me to feel my way over thing much easier than with a manual
Ive two auto 460's and a manual 460 all swb 300gd's, the autos are far quicker from standstill than the manual,p38 dsl range rovers are the same an auto one feels far quicker from standstill than a manual, just what you want for off roading, to get up and over things.
with a manual 300GD trying to get up a steep band or something like that from a standstill can be a nightmare with an auto its far easier, then there the less strain on the drive train with an auto, as it wont get the same shock loads as with a manual, as there's no "mechanical" link the the engine.
the only fault I can think of with autos is they cant be bump started if the starter packs up or the batteries flat, you can however tow start a auto G if you can get it up to 15-20mph.

Run a 230,280 then a560 all with auto, wouldnt have anything else, the merc box is nice as you can lock it in first gear for decents, used my 280 in challenge events with hydraulic winches, worked nice and smooth with auto, and yea you can bump start the auto g wagen, done it myself, even tells you how to do it in the hand book, neutral tow for 100 yds, knock it into 2nd and hey presto !

I'm running a G Wagen 300 GD Auto as a green laner. She's proven to be very capable!!. She is a bit unusual as she has a turbo conversion. I like the auto especially in the tight stuff - is it usually is being as our lanes are so narrow and the "G" is so big & boxey. Do be prepared for a slow old girl on the motorway though. My motor will pull 70/75 dropping to 60 on a gradient and she's got 235/85/16 insaturbo special track's on. What she lacks in power she more than makes up for with mechanical grip (& characterful personality!!) They seem pretty robust as well although rear springs, heater motors and fuel tank leaks are known problems. All in all though I'm thilled with it!
