Sorry, just realised it is in a section of the site where you have to have made a certain number of posts to be able to see.

We could start a new thread for difflockers who want to read about drop boxes, where everyone just counts each other posts lol

If there is this much interest then why dont you all chip together and approach someone to build a set??
I did play around with this from the 303 box's but the start up coast is a few quid to have them sat on the shelf but if you had a good order for 10+ box's then someone would take on the project???

I'm begining to think it would be easier to weld two independant Yota front ends together. Better handling, a diff well out of the way and easy 4x4x4. Probably a lot lighter too! Coupled with the fact my local club says it won't let portals in, I'm going off the portal idea. Sad

Or go buy a nice Pinzgauer for 10k. Diesel, coil sprung, and everything that you need built in. Plenty of room for a beer fridge as well Very Happy .

Take a landy; decent car 4k, diff locks, 1.5k, lift kit, big tyres, portals. Starting to look expensive Sad

You could argue an old rangy is £600? I did that, had to change the engine, now the gearbox is spread all over the garage.

Or maybe I'm on a downer tonight?

Heck, I might 'U' turn and get fired back up next week and see if Portal Tek are still up for a budget kit?

reason i fancy making a drop box is to reduce the ratio a touch to compensate for the big wheels. If you drop the ratio in the boxes you take a lot of torque off the drivetrain, so could use cheaper parts. I would also keep the drop box small enough to fit inside the wheel still, ie only a 4-6 inches or whatever would fit, then gain further clearance by having an independant diff mounted in a homemade spaceframe bent axle, similar to a de dion rear set up if you're familiar. Shout if that doesnt make sense! I think a drop box could contain about £150 of parts per corner in small volumes.

Only from the turny bits - it will add a massive load to the kingpins, and probably enough to the back axle tube to bend it. You can tell from the mog axle tubes that they're meant to take the additional loads from a portal.

Hi Jake. I'm sorry I have been away in Vietnam for several months and haven't kept in touch with the internet, so I haven't as yet seen your PM. As soon as I settle back in and recover/remember my lr4x4 password I'll endeavor to answer any pms received. As things stand even I can't access that article on my vehicle until I log in with the correct password.
Anyone here who has read my lengthy description on the build of my portal boxes would understand that it would be impractical to repeat it here if a link to the article on lr4x4 could otherwise be arranged.
Although my portals have been successful and have covered many thousands of trouble free miles, it is not a conversion that I would advocate to anyone unless they really wanted to make their own and had free access to suitable a lathe, milling machine, internal and external splining equipment etc, plus a lot of free time on their hands. I built them at a time when Unimog and Volvo axles were as rare as rocking horse poo here in Australia, and very expensive to boot. these days Mog 404 axles are much more affordable and readily available, and if I were to build another portal axled rig I'd be grafting mog swivel/portal assemblies onto reinforced Land Rover/Toyota or Nissan axle housings. I think mog diffs are excessively bulky and more difficult to work with, and I am not too keen on their difflock design to seriously consider retaining them.

regards Bill.

hi Bill,

got access to a lathe and milling machine at school , the reareson im asking about portals is that we think there's going to be a significant problem putting 33"+ tyres on the landzuki as we slightly got the chassis length wrong so it will end up with not much suzuki body left when come to fit big tyres!
