Hi,

I suggest you get a copy of KIT CARS AND THE LAW published by Kit Car magazine. Send an Email to kitcarman@ntlworld.com ask how to do this. There is a phone number 0870 112 0896, but it sayd "faxback" ?????

Book is £10 including postage. But it is worth having id you proceed with your project. Also worth it if it prevents you spending abortive money. Also worth it if you are rebuilding a Landy, SVA or not.

Hi,

The SVA covers such nasties as sharp edges, position of seat belt mounts, design weights, position of mirrors, postion of lamps, and lots more. Shouldn't be too difficult if you know the rules. Get a book.

Buy a scrap Fiat 126/or similar, stick the numberplates on it and get it MOT'd....

Thats what most buggy builders do....

I'm not sure whether the sva man would have something to say about the position of your radiator? If a hose pops at that, your head's gonna be nice and toastie!!

good luck with it though, all it's mising is a metro turbo engine.....

Why not register it as an agriculteral vehicle?
Its far easier and I dont think you need SVA, should be free road tax aswell

Hi,

Only a person employed in agriculture can drive an agricultutal vehicle. Most of us are not allowed to drive a farm tractor, although our licences says we can. There was a case years ago where a farmer got done for road tax. He was taking his daughter's pony to the local horse show, in a trailer behind his tractor. I suspect that if he had said he was taking it to the knackers yard, all would have been well. Meat = Agriculture.

There was also a case of the Unimog towing a 20 ton trailer full of potatoes. Only, the potatoes were not the product of his farm, he was trading in them. Also he was 28 miles from his farm, limit for ag. vehicle is (was?) 15 miles. The fine ran to several thousand pounds.

Other case law says that carrying furniture for a farm labourer's cottage is not "agriculture".

Be careful. Its easier to keep to the rules than bend them. Having said that, my Suzuki quad was registered as an Agricultural Vehicle. I was stopped once in 2000 miles.

Around here (Herefordshire - spud land) the laws around tractors/agri vehicles are blatantly ignored - for financial reasons mainly.

We have 16 year old lads driving air braked '50k' and faster tractors with 14 ton root trailers behind, a mate of mine grossed 38 Tons over a weighbridge with a wet load of spuds when he was 17.

We also have huge trailers, poorly serviced, and massively over weight back and forth all over the county.

Then we have Potato growers transporting the crop by tractor/trailer on red Diesel from the other side of the county. A friend of a friend ws lugging in the way just mentioined a few years ago - but from PEMBROKE to TENBURY WELLS! 2 trips a day.

On the other hand a local agri/engineering contractor got done for lugging stone and soil around with JCB Fastracs when they probably should have been registered as HGV's and definitely on white diesel.

That's anothe point altogether - should these massive tractor/trailer combinations have tachos and be registered as HGV's???

As above, any tractor being used on the public highway for agricultural purposes are allowed to be on red Diesel, if they are not being used for agricultural purposes then they have to be on white.

Personally i hate fasttracks, they come flying down our road with a 13tonne hymac on the back, and would they stop it if a child ran out infront of them, would they ****!

Modern tractors all have a coupling on the back, that alow trailers to have haydralic trailer breaks.

We have a local guy that only has a tractor!!

He is not employed in agriculture (he's a council worker) and drives his tractor as a car, it is on white diesel, taxed and insured and used up to 20 miles away!

Hi,

Thats naughty. Only people engaged in agriculture, including contractors and forestry, are allowed to drive agricultural vehicles on the road. Its a road tax problem, not driving licence. Ag tractor tax is cheaper than a car tax.

It may be possible to register a tractor as a car........but what happens at MOT time?

Hmmmm. Pre-1960 commercials don't require tax or MOT, provided they weigh more than 1500kg. But don't all rush, 4x4 need to weigh a lot more.

I have often wondered how my local council can use small tractors to drag trailers round town, and how much road tax they pay.
