My Optimas finally need replacing. many yrs down the line, lots of hard work, running at -50C, standing around with constant drain for weeks on end..etc etc.

Do I buy new Optimas or do I go for something cheap? Previously always rang OEM stuff last ones cost £35 each and seemed OK.

I went for AGMs after hearing a few negative comments about spirals.

I've run 2 Banner AGMs on my comp Trooper for a couple of years with no problems whatsoever.

CCA of around 750 each and last time £100 from Frogs Island or £140 from good factors.

Probably worth using standard if you're not winching or using heavy load too much, save a bundle of cash!

When I replaced the Shogun battery after 6 years, the best deal I could get was an OEM from a Mitsi. dealer.
I have always gone for budget batteries on the Yota. Present one's are Unipart and they have been in about 3 years. Previous one's were from the Lucas Shop, 3 year warranty, no markings and they lasted 6 years.
I see no point in buying overblown, overrated, overpriced and overhere batteries.

Thanks for pretty much backing up what I was thinking. the OEM Yota ones were fine, didnt last anything like the length the Optima's have though. I've no complaints the Optimas have been brilliant and I run everything including two winches off main units as no space for any additional ones. I'll take a look around at prices/warranties

Yes you are right and the plan was to replace the Optimas. The reason for the post was that a couple of people have made comments about them and I wanted to see if these were substantiated by anyone on here... they're not so I shall replace.

Thanks Roger - can't remember what the warranty is on them but know they reckon they should last 3 times std battery - 5-7yrs.

Sarah,

I'll add to what Roger has said. I personally know of 3 vehicles that have had failures, admittedly they were all heavy users but that was the blurb when they came out wasn't it?
The rest I have heard is second & third hand tales of total failures on stage.

i have used bosch silver batteries (available quite cheap from costco) on my 4x4's and plant. brilliant batteries, had 2 together on my winched sammy that stood up well to the abuse. put one on a dumper that would never start, no trouble since even after no use through the winter.

Two yellow top Optima's one for starting and one for winch/fridge/inverter, decent 100 amp alternator ect and no problems about two years now on my Disco.

I may keep them when I get rid of the car and put them on an 80.

regards

Dave

Does this mean you are no longer selling up then Sarah?

I have learned over the years that standard batteries only die if they are left discharged for long periods. I invested in a couple of those little solar trickle chargers - one for the caravan leasure battery and one for the top of the dash on the Surf for when it is parked up for long periods. I can't say whether it has made a difference on the Surf (any excuse to drive it Very Happy ) but it has saved the leasure battery on the wally trolley.
