Hi all,
Has anyone done the kingpins on a 404? How do you get the bottom cover off - the huge downward pointing thing with the grease nipple on?
What's it like doing them?
jim

you undo the two 24mm bolts that hold the steering arms on(need a long bar)but make sure you have the axel in the air and suported they should then pull off with a drift or puller

Hi Jim,
How did you get on with the king pins?
Mine have been shot of ages, finally got round to taking them apart this weekend, easier job than i thought. The bottom pin/ bearing is fine, but the top pin is badly worn (due to blocked grease nipple & therefore lack of grease) and i will need some heat to get the old pin out.
I got a replacement pin and bush kit from Manfred for a reasonable cost.
Its also a good time replace a few leaking drive shaft seals.
regards Mike

I just tightened the bottom up. We have spare axles which are in much better condition than the ones that are on it. I decided I didn't want to invest any more money in them. It's been fine, so I'm keeping an eye on it.
We did all the output seals a few years ago, single most rewarding thing we've done on it - fantastic when they don't leak. We had to remove 8 - because *all* the hubs in our axles were knackered and needed replacing from spares mog. I ended up making this -
The 50 ton coffee table.
cheers,
jim

Wow, thats one hell of a puller. I take it your hubs were a little stubbon!
I was lucky, my hubs came stright off with a cheap Halfords puller that looks like its made of cheese - but it worked!
