Went to change the springs on my car this a.m.
I soaked the bolts of the shackles and U-bolts etc in WD40 last week and so all bolts loosened nicely, but the spring eye bolts at the front of the spring where they go in to the chassis are proving hard to undo. Because they're sort of boxed in, in that hanger bracket I cant' get any heat on.
I've stopped and now I'm going to wait untill next weekend as I need to get 21mm impact socket. But for those of you who have done this job, have you got any pointers?
Thanks

Just watch how you go. I have read of the captive nut inside the frame rail breaking free and leaving you with a spinning bolt but probably the bolt is rusted into the steel sleeve in the eye bush.

I found the front bolts, particularly the nearside one, to be the hardest part of the whole job.

I was using a spark plug socket to start with on a breaker bar and ripped the socket open. Armed with a new socket and a length of scaffold tube on the end of the breaker bar (!) the bolt eventually began to move......

The next hardest job was replacing the shackle bolt at the other end with one hand whilst leavering the spring with a full length crowbar in the other. All good fun.

Steve.

I managed with an impact socket and a 2ft breaker bar, pushing the bar up, like bench-pressing Shocked

I also used plus-gas penetrating/release oil, rather than W(water) D(displacement) 40. Wink

Yeah cheers for that; although I didn't use WD40. It's just quicker for me to type that! Laughing

I had the same problem and used a strongarm, managed to rip the captive nut out of the chassis, ended up having to open the box section up to replace the nut. Trouble was I had used my leg to push against the strongarm and tore the tendons in my knee. Jeep fixed in a few hours, knee took months. Embarassed
