I`m just in the middle of designing a tray back and iv been reading around that to bend CDS tube you can only use mandrel benders or special machine benders, similar to those used for exhaust systems.

my Q: HAS ANYBODY USED ONE OF THESE HYDROLIC BENDERS SEEN ON EBAY TO BEND CDS TUBE AND WHAT WAS YOUR OPINION ON THE BENDS AND OVERALL FINISH.

( SHOW PICTURES OF YOUR WORK AND TELL US WHAT TUBE YOU USED )

Many Thanks Gloves.

you will be lucky to bend pipe with the chepo benders
the problem is with the formers NOT the bender the original formers was a cast one and when you sat the pipe into it it came above the centerline of the pipe the new ones have been cheepend up using less material and are not a full 90 degree former so as soon as you bend over 60 degree the tube starts to flatten unlike my original sealy bender that will bend a full 90
i guess you get what you pay for (try and look for a second hand original unit from the likes of record/staffa/sealy)you will stand a far better chance
your only a few miles from me if you want to come and have a look pop me a pm

Have you tried your local HSS hire shop or similar? You could get a lot of bending done in a day, and they usually do deals for weekends if you go in and ask.

I had a look at one in a hss hire shop and the formers looked the same as the benders they sell in machine mart.

iv read all the web site and everybodys got different opinion about what you should use which is slowly driving me insane.i went to ashworth frazier`s at bury and asked about CDS and they said they don`t sell it but told me a lot of people use QT( 48.3mm x 3.68mm thick ) or ( 42.16mm x 3.56mm )DOES ANYBODY KNOW ANYWERE IN THE NORTH WEST ??? OR A GOOD LINK TO A SITE FOR SIZE`S AND WEIGHTS ???

i have just made a rollcage for my disco with one of these, i used 38 O/D seemed tube(not comp spec i know) i bent up a a small length to start with and it had a hurendous flat spot in it...i contunued to bend and the steel eventually folded just after 45 degrees.

what yuou have to do to stop it from folding is first fill the tube with water(tape off one end) then fill it up with sand as you fill it up the sand will displace the water. calculate the volume of one foot and after youve filled the tube with a foots worth of sand give it a knock with a mallet and pack it down with something. repeat untill tube is full with sand. then bend away.

pic of my rear hoop which was done with a "bottle jack bender"

all in all it is a very time consuming way of doing it... also problematic if you dont have anything tall to stand on. i think its worth mentioning that its worth buying a notcher, i used a grinder and although i consider myself rather good at using one notching it like that was also very time consuming...and most of the notches diddnt fit very well!

also worth a mention, dont try and cut corners by not puting the water in there and just filling it with wet sand....it doesnt work! Embarassed

they are also very easey and quick to set up. compleeted my cage in 2 days.
