Hi All,
I was riding shotgun with my friend today at a challenge event and we needed to retire early due to a shredded clutch.
He runs a 1.6 8v in his samurai with a new clutch fitted when he did the conversion about 5 months ago (2000 miles)
how long would you expect a standard clutch to last when driven hard (my friend has an abnormally large right foot)?
What type of clutch would you recommend?

The key to long clutch life is DON'T SLIP THEM!
A clutch isn't designed for slipping, it should be slipped a little to smooth out pulling away but after that it should be on or off like a switch.
Driving style and possibly a lowering of the gearing would help.
Even when towing people out I don't slip the clutch - either tension the strap and then clutch out and apply power or on a Bungee rope - just drive away slowly...
in many many thousands of miles of roadwork and lots of offroading, I've only killed 1 clutch - on the road, revved my Suzuki engine to 8000rpm and all the friction material parted from the clutchplate
The carb had developed a fault and I got angry!

I have used the Petroworks clutch, it is one you can slip if required, expensive but you only fit it once.

Standard clutch will be fine as long as you keep your foot off the pedal, slipping the clutch will kill them in no time at all ..

I don't have a clutch. What is this thing you speak of. I got in a car today that had an extra pedal to the left of the brake. I have nearly forgotten what it is for!
Seriosly though. Auto is the way to SPAM you have a heavy right foot.

the std 1.3 clutch is a bit marginal when used on the 1.6 engine...slipping it is very bad...it will not last long if you do!!
what gearing and tyres are you using???...with a rocklobster t/case you never need to slip the clutch...in my experiance..even with big tyres.ive never trashed a clutch yet...and my right foot is very heavy!...get the gearing right and the std clutch will be ok...if not then you need to spend on an uprated clutch.

Muddy water doesn't help much, it acts like abrasive paste......... Especially the grey stuff at places like Devil's Pit.

He is currently running the standard gearing but not massive rubber (only 215/75/15)
Most of the places we go are quarries and old mine works so tha mud is nasty. Petetong recently informed me that the mud we played in on sunday is full of quartz!
