I hadn't realised they made an auto!

Somebody slap me for not knowing!

In my view you cannot go wrong with an Automatic offroad.

It is said that they don't have as much engine braking - A modern box in good condition, locked in 1st lo should have almost as much as a manual....

You have no clutch to slip, get full of mud or burn out, you have a smoother crawl speed on rough terrain, and your starter motor will last twice as long as you'll never stall it in that muddy puddle.

On hills it is point and shoot, it'll always be in the right gear...

there only 1 thing about autos when your alternator packs up or ure Suzuki starter packs up as we all know they are a little temperamental there ain't no bump starting anymore...

Don't be too sure Luke, a lot of autoboxes have a pump on the output shaft that enables tow starting, My Merc Auto could be bump started.

You can re-start most autos by bump-starting if you are quick about it! It takes a minutre or so for all the oil to drain.

I would imagine the jimmni uses the same box as late vitaras? If so, you have easy control over the torque converter lockup - via a valve whose connecting wires are accessible.

Stick 12v into the valve & the TC locks up! It would be ideal for hill decents if perhaps controlled by a button on the gearshift.

Si

That is what I thought. Or better still, adapt the cranking handle concept to accept an electric/battery drill formula 1 stylee.

You live and learn! I never knew that. So how does that work then and what do I do to take advantage of it?

only 16 but try cranking a 3.5 v8 over with a cranking handle... didnt get it started and did my back in lol i was only doing it as dad said it was actually poosible as earier rover v8s on rangies have a slot in the bumper and a slot in the front crank pulley for a cranking handle... but having a charged battry and good starter is much easier...
