I have a 87' SJ 410 which i want to use on the road but its very slow. Therefore, like many people, I want to fit a diesel engine. I was thinking a 1.8l unit (and gearbox) from a sierra but want to know if this engine/gearbox will fit with the rad still in the front. Also, does the car have to be SVA'd afterwards?

Thanks

Anything will fit! Just depends how far your willing to go! Very Happy

Iv managed to squeeze a Daihatsu 2.8td engine and box and thats a mahoosive engine! Had to make new gearbox mounts, managed to cut the origonal suzuki mounts off and re-weld them in different places.

May be worth taking the body off to do it, would make things easier, aswell, fit the engine as far back as possible or you stand more chance of goin end over end! Shocked

Would have thought ud need strengthened springs at the front to cope with the extra weight. Iv heard of people using the ford 1.8td escort engine with the seirra or granada gearbox.

If you tell vosa about it by changing it on ur logbook- which you technically should do, as it would change the tax class. It will be upto the inspector weather of not it needs SVA'ing.

Hope to be of help. Cheers. Mick

I do not have any personal experience in such matters but I've seen posts on here saying that the Ford 1.8 TD lump isn't the best choice. It's apparently not that torquey and I would imagine it's not as reliable as the Isuzu 1.7TD lump you get in many Astras, Cavaliers etc. Be aware that Vauxhall did their own 1.7 that was nowhere near as good, stick to the Isuzu lump. From memory the Isuzu is very distinctive and I think that's the one with the big black plastic air intake over the top of the head. The Vauxhall lump looks like any other engine and has a very distinctive oil filler cap right on top of the rocker cover.

If you can find an Opel Manta gearbox I suspect (though don't know for sure) that it'll bolt straight up to the Isuzu lump.
