|
|
|
Hi,
My mate demostrated his LWB Nissan this afternoon. Very impressive performance. But what he was trying to show me was his clonk.
Pulls out of his drive, turns right onto steep hill down. Dreadful clonking, much like a broken lump of tooth stuck between two other teeth. Sounded very expensive. He then stopped, engaged 4WD and the clonking stopped. Next problem was that 4WD will not disengage (tho lever moves) until he reaches the bottom of his hill, and negotiates a full-lock hairpin to get onto the main road. He tells me that noise will not return until he starts it tomorrow morning.
I have no ideas, but wonder if it may be associated with him reversing into his drive at full lock, then exits drive at full other lock. Once into his drive, he does not travel in a straight line....his front bumper is immediately over the road boundary.
Steep hill, includes a blind bend, Barbara going down at a walking speed has to do a crash stop. Bimbo in a Eurobox playing at Shelsy Walsh also has to do a crash stop, only hers took longer. She nearly had to buy Barbara new car.

A good source of techincal info for terrano owners is www.nissan4x4owners.co.uk
What age of vehicle does he have? There are lots of causes of clonking on these cars, most simple to remedy, and sounding worse than they really are. But some are related to models over a certain age, so more info would be great.
I'm thinking the vehicle has auto free wheel hubs, and the noise is related to a part of the hub called the snap ring, that breaks if the vehicle is used on a firm surface in 4wd. If it breaks it can make a lot of noise, and it also stops 4wd from working, as drive does not go to the effected hub at all, rendering the vehicle in a permanent state of 2wd.
More info & I might be able to help a bit more.

Hi JonathanM
Sorry I didn't notice what year his truck is, tho he did say it was a 2.7 turbo. The clunking felt like it was under the floor, and was giving a rough ride...worse than just a noise.
I will pass this mail onto him, maybe he can describe it better.

Of course the Terrano is part-time 4wd with no centre diff so should not be run in 4WD when on the road. It is difficult to get out of 4wd if the transmission is wound up.
Remember also the the 4WD light stays lit until the Auto hubs unlock. The simplest way to unlock them is to reverse a short distance after switching to 2wd.
It is not quite clear when your mate is experiencing the noise, is it in a straight line or is it on a bend (you keep mentioning full lock)
When off-roaded my Terrano would loose the plastic steering stops (well at least thats what the dealer calls them) which then means it makes the most awful noise when the steering is on lock (either forward or reverse)

Hi,
My mate reverses onto his drive at full left lock, stops as soon as he is fully off the road, exits at full right lock, straightens up as soon as he is able. Clonking occurs when he has straightened up, possibly while on lock as well. Stop, engage 4WD, continue...no clonking. But he is on a steep hill, 4WD does not disengage until he is on the flat. I cannot remember if he stopped to disengage. As soon as he is on the flat, you can feel it disengage. No more clonking...until next time.
He showed me that his truck would not roll without power even when stationary on the hill. Odd sized diffs and/or tyres crossed my mind. My mate wondes if the 4WD is sort of falling into place then being thrown out again. Is that possible?

Hi,
Just had the folowing from my mate 602
hi john just had your email in
all through the summer when weather is warm i experiance no problems with the drive but now the temperature has dropped ,whenever i move off from cold the transmision 'snatches' ,if i then go into 4wdrive for a few seconds and then back into 2wdrive this 'snatching' stops and the car drives normally until i stop for some time and everything cools down. most of the time this occurs when moving forward ,straight line or round bends, makes no difference. doesn't seem to do it in reverse though. best of luck merry christmas to you and babs. regards bill

If he is using 4wd on a solid surface and turning while using forward or reverse, even on a hill, it is most definitly wind up, and could get expensive if the front diff goes.

Hi Drift,
But thats whats confusing us. My mate says that he thinks it feels like 4WD is flicking in and out......but he hasn't touched the transfer lever. If he engages 4WD everything becomes smooth, though you can feel the drag, and he has difficulty disengaging 4WD for the next 100 yards because of the hill. The lever moves to 2WD position, but front axle stays engaged until he is on the flat, when it eventually disengages. Is that normal?
Its a manual gearbox.

I assume he is relying on the dashboard indicator light to tell him that the 4wd hasn't disengaged? If he is, then the light staying on is usually a good indicator of transmission wind up.
Now, with regards the problem he gets, he states it only happens when cold. Terrano's in winter can have a problem with the transfer box dragging when cold due to oil viscosity, causing the propshaft to turn & engage the hubs etc, the solution to which is to stop, and then carry on.
Ask him to try this and see if it works, forget putting into 4wd, that will seem to help by actually engaging the transfer box, whereas what he needs to do is stop the transfer box from engaging the hubs.
I don't get this problem on mine, but I've trawled www.nissan4x4ownersclub.co.uk forum and there is a current post about this problem in the members section. I can't link to it because it is a members site, but the original poster has put this info in:
HI ALL
now the cold weather is here the old transfer box is at it again.
I set of as usual this morning and got just down the road and whats that racket. yup transfer box.
it made me think that a few new members probably have come across it before.
its thick oil making the gears start to turn front prop shaft.
IF YOURS DOES THIS ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS STOP .
you will get a bit of a clonk as it disconnects and then all will be well.

Hi Jonathan,
Whats a Lockstop?
Hi G,
S, are you suggesting that my mate needs to fill up with multigrade gear oil? Something like 15/90? Would a thinner oil be a good idea during the winter? I don't think he does serious off-roading, or prolonged 4WD.
Hi All,
I will pass on the recent mail to my mate, and I don't know if I will have time tomrrow morning to wish everybody a Merry Christmas.

i was saying about Lockstops, they limit the amount of steering lock available, i dont know if terranos have them, they are metal to metal and have to be greased very often or they sound just like a propshaft or drive shaft knackered. as for Oil, normal gear oil should be fine, we dont experience cold enough weather over here for it to be a huge problem. i work at a big car dealer franchise and one of them is Nissan, and they are forever taking gearboxes and transfer boxes out of all the 4x4 range.

Lockstops is what I was refering to in my earlier posts as plastic steering stops. There is some sort of plastic bit that falls off/gets knocked off when off-roading and makes the most dreadful noise when on full lock.
However, the problem doesn't sound like that from the discussions in later posts. Mine certainly never made clunking noises when the t-box was cold, and I had the dubious pleasure of travelling in 4WD low ratio on the M25 for 15 miles in a blizzard a few years back, certaintly the t-box was cold on starting up on a number of a occassions.

Transmission drag when cold doesn't efect all Terrano's - mine diesn't suffer it, for example, but the whole front drive on mine is turning anyway because I don't have FWH. Agree we shouldn't get enough temperature variation to cause such a problem, but you can't guarantee that this particular vehicle has been serviced with the correct oil anyway. The LSD's on the rear axle are often a pain like this because less knowledgeable garages sometimes use say EP90 rather than the specific LSD oil needed.
The most he would be advised to do is change the oil in the transfer box for the reccomended grade, and see if that helps.
The reason that 4wd will help is by actually engaging the 4wd section of the transfer box, so it doesn't drag, and by warming the oil up a bit. But with the risk of transmission wind up, so you take your chances...
The lockstops/steering stops are fitted to Terrano's, and they do make an awful metal to metal grating noise if the wheel is at full lco & the vehicle moving.
I'll put another plug here for www.nissan4x4ownersclub.co.uk as they have a set of "workshop" sheets explaning some common DIY jobs, like steering lock servicing, and, on the TD (not the TDI) the mini filter servicing on the fuel pump.

Hi,
I mailed my mate...he lives 20 miles away... and he replied that it is still raining. But he IS aware that we are anxiously waiting for the next thrilling installment.
Still raining? Yep, I slipped in the mud on the canal towpath this morning, landed in the same mud (deep). Dog didn't reckon much on us going home early. I'm getting too old to fall over, I don't bounce any more, feel like I've been hit by a huge cricket bat. But towpath is ROW (?) so council don't need to maintain it. ??? Where were we discussing accidents and compensation (just joking).

This sounds similar to a problem I had with a Pajero. It my case it was caused by the auto free-wheeling hubs being incorrectly assembled. (Not by me I hasten to add). Possibly from the factory.
Re-building the hubs was the cure.
