I just bought myself a Unimog 404. It is fantastic!
I took it for a spin around my mates farm and drove it through his swamp and then over one of his cross country show jumps, very impressive.

Shame the engine has died after that first day. I have stripped and cleaned the carb. I have found the plugs where badly worn and massively gapped so I swapped them for some Saab plugs of similar proportions and rebuilt some leads with the screw cap ends but the Distributor cap is cracked and horrible, does anybody know where I can get one for sensible money or even a standard type that will fit instead?

I have managed to get the engine to run again, but not well.

Also the exhaust manifold is well corroded and the controls for the flap valve have rotten off, what is this for and is there anyway to tell where it is without a strip down?

I'm also after some engine covers, I have the right hand one but nothing else , just easy access.

BTW I didn't get any water anywhere near the engine and I'm now pulling fresh clean petrol direct from a Jerry can and the pump is horsing it through to the carb OK.

Also what is the situation with taxing and driving a 404 on the road?
It is currently registered as a mobile crane but the crane has been removed. I would like to be able to take it out locally for a spin occasionally to shows and the like. It is a 1964 so would I be best to go historic and could I then drive it on my standard car licence (old enough not to have the weight restrictions on it).

I don't know much about it's history. The last owner had it off the road for the last 10 years or so, before that it came from London. On the door it has Bowker Air Services which through Google I found to have been an aerial crop spraying firm. Before that I have no idea although I suspect it to have been ex-military from the screened 24V electrics, what's left of them that is. Which military I don't know but it would be nice to work it out.

Truth be told I don't really know beyond get it up and running again.
The price was right and I've always hankered after one, so I just bought it.

I have many projects I need to do to my Landy first but the Mog does have a very big distraction factor.

Oh yes, they are!

Are you getting a spark at the plugs themselves?

You may have some luck getting a vacuum advance distributor from a 60's era M180 equipped coupe. We have one and it's OK. Can't tell you exactly what it's from, but the M180 is, largely, the M180.

>I have managed to get the engine to run again, but not well.
What about the advance? Have you a timing light to use? Just put a 12V one between the batteries.

It is to initially heat the inlet charge to stop it condensing in the manifold when it's cold. There should be a bi-metal coil which controls it. You can probably just hold it in the "warm" position, they run like **** when cold anyway!

Can't help ya there - wouldn't be hard to make though.

Are you in the UK? If you are, then this - http://www.foodfight.org.uk/mog/registering.shtml - documents my mission to swap our Q plated crane mog to being a properly registered historic HGV.

As part of re-registering your mog, you'll have to prove how old it is. I did this by getting the data card from Ma Benz. I rang the UK mog sales people with the chassis number, and they eventually got the data card for me from germany.

Good luck,

jim

Thank you Shaggy.

I am indeed in the UK up in County Durham.

I haven't checked the advance at all, mostly spent the time bodging together some leads, I wouldn't be in the least surprised if it was seized up. I will have a go at rebuilding it. I do have a timing lamp. Would I be able to do the same thing with a dwell meter too?

I have tried to turn the ends of the spindle through the manifold but it is solid, must be a least partially open as it runs.

The chassis plate states 1964 and it also matches the chassis, which I have to say is in astonishingly good condition, if it had been a Land Rover left out for all that time it would be rotten.

I don't know when I will next get a chance to work on the Mog. I have a Twist Off Ramp to build, 2 tru tracs an ARB and two 4 pin standard diffs to build up and peg plus a winch and on board air system to install to my Land Rover all by the first weekend in July Shocked

Well she's running! Needs a damn good tune now but I couldn't resist taking it out for a little play Very Happy

I'm toying with the idea of Bob-Tailing her and doing something interesting and tubular too. Quite inspired by the Moab stuff but something more suited to the British weather I guess. The body is a mess and the back has already been messed with. A lot more thinking first though Confused[/url]

For what it is worth, I played hell trying to register my 404 here in the UK. I went to 8 garages, VOSA, VCA, DVLA, and was finally told by the folks at VOSA "look mate you're not going to register that thing here." I later went direct to DVLA with the original 1962 registration and a printout from the Mercedes webpage ref UNIMOG history that declared it was designed as an agricultural vehicle. DVLA didn't blink, they said if the manufacturer states it is an agricultural vehicle/tractor, then they wont argue. Historic tractor registration, no MOT, no Tax, no problems.

Today I boarded out the back of the Mog, it was just the frame. And then I went off and gathered in a few bales.
