Right I am a total novice here.. Soon I'll be driving with my 2a on the road, Its a 2.25 Diesel which I have rebuilt with new Rings and oil seals. And as a student, it'll be difficult to keep running with diesel. So im looking at alterative fuels.. I have heard that you can make Bio diesel by mixing Diesel and Veg oil, Is that correct?.

Will it do any harm to my engine. I also noticed when they are on Bio-Diesel they seem to smoke a lot more on start up too..

Basically I can get red diesel for 65p a litre, But Obviously I'm not allowed to use that so looks like it'll be WVO or Bio diesel..
Like said I know nothing about Bio-Diesel at all so can someone confirm whether its worth doing in a 5brg 2.25 Diesel landrover engine?. And can I just throw it straight in or what?. Will it effect my Injector pump?. I am mechanically minded so wouldnt mind having to carry out more maintainence if it saves a substantial amount of money?

Can someone basically tell me all the pro's and con's please?

Bio Diesel is NOT veg oil, it is made from Veg oil via a Chemical reaction called Transesterification.

Read the Stickies at the top of this section for more Info.

Proper Bio-Diesel will be fine in your engine, but Straight (unaltered) veg oil, will not be fine in your engine, Even if mixed with diesel.

Your injector pump is a CAV pump and is very sensitive to fuel viscosity, put veg oil in and it will fail, the rotor will seize.

Wether this will happen after 2 years or 2 miles, It's anybodys guess.... It could last for ages, and it might not.

Your option for running straight veg oil would be to fit a twin tank conversion, where you start on diesel and when the engine and injection pump is warm (you supply heated fuel to the IP) you switch to veg oil, heating it makes it thinner.

So to sum it up, Proper Bio-Diesel (FAME) is fine, veg oil is a no no for your car.

Thanks that sums it up now. So Im perfectly fine to buy Bio-Diesel and throw it straight in without issues?. Would I have to change Fuel filters more often and maybe throw some injector cleaner in time to time or anything?. Also heard about putting a drop of petrol in the Bio diesel to help it go through the lines?.

Like I said I never considered Bio Diesel, But if it'll work perfectly fine in my Landrover 2a I'll Buy a load from my mate who buys it at 1000 litres per time!. He runs everything on it, His BMW, His 130 defender, His Lorry's and his van's as he does thousands of miles a week! Shocked .. He says for the problems he has with the 130 it's worth sticking to Bio.

Obviously there must be some disadvantages bar the Extra smoke and smell?.

And I was told not to use Bio-Diesel older than 3 months old, As they change the mixture every months to cope with the Heat/cold weather?.

Sorry for the dumb questions, But I'd looks like its the future and best way to go..

No, bio-diesel is Lovely stuff, less toxic than salt and degrades quicker than sugar.
Car will run with less smoke and possibly be quieter too, Exhaust might smell faintly of chips.
Bio diesel is almost as thin as normal diesel so no extra thinning is needed.

Yes it will go off if stored for a long time but if its in airtight containers its not a worry.

It will clean gunk out of your fuel tank and fuel pipes, change your fuel filter after the first 500 miles on bio and then all will be fine.

All you need to check for is Rubber fuel pipes, it will eat them.

Thanks a lot mate! Cool .. You've cleared a lot of stuff up for me.. I'll buy half a dozen Diesel filters, I want to swap it before anyway as I have had some right ***** in there! No worries with swapping Filters.. I mean its not a hard job on a series, Its very easily accessible, And my Injector pipes are steel and copper, But ill watch everything else for possible leaks..

Whats average price of Bio at the minute?. Think Ill go and get 50 Litres or so?. I know exactly what it smells like too! Laughing

while we are here, How would my Dads 02 L200 take it being a turbo engine?..

You need to find a Commercial producer of Bio-Diesel.
You want B100 for 100% Bio, but sometimes B5. B50 and B85 is offered.

A good tip is to find the producer all the taxi drivers use, they won't accept poor diesel that makes the car breakdown!

If its called V100 then stay away.

I don't know how close you are to Huddersfield but Bev is a member on here.
Was about 93ppl the other day.

Yes to the 'bishi Will be fine on properly made Bio

We recommend that when you first start using biodiesel start on a 50%biodiesel/50% normal diesel mix, then gradually increase the percentage of biodiesel.

Get yourself a fuel filter and carry it and tools with you, wait until your car lets you know it needs the fuel filter needs changing. As it starts to block you will feel a loss of power and it may start to 'ocker'. That is the time to change it. Some people need to change the filter within 1000 miles on biodiesel, some don't need to change it til after 5000+ or not at all.

If your vehicle is pre 1994 it may have rubber hoses instead of the modern plastic ones, these will need changing as biodiesel may de-grade them.

The price of biodiesel varies country wide, ours is currently £1.08 (need to update the price on the Trusted Trader section), many tend to sell it for 10p less per litre than normal diesel. Make sure you get it from a reputable supplier, not all biodiesel is what they claim it to be!

You don't need to put any petrol in with biodiesel. In winter it's advisable to just use about 60% biodiesel 40% normal diesel as most biodiesel, particularly if it is made from wvo, has a higher CFPP (cold filter plugging point) and will gel at temperatures of about -4 and below.
