|
|
|
Hello Differs,
I have a friend here in Spain that competes in trials and on the last trial he has snapped a shaft and a reduction hub from the back axles, left side. The axles come from a C-306 6x6 and the shaft and hub are from the last axle, the one at the back.
Anyone know of where to find these parts second hand???
And what is the maximum Tyre's size these axles can hold?? He on 40" Tyre's and a range rover v8 with auto box which is not as violent on the transmissions. Any suggestions on how to reinforce them???
Thanks for your help and ideas.
Some pics of the machine:

I know we've been emailing recently and it seems that the centre axle halfshaft is shorter but I can help you with the gears.

The differentials are all in slightly different places so the shafts must be different as well.

Thanks for the help guys
We will manage to get some solutions.
Now any suggestions on how to strengthen them??? I thought these axles were as strong as Mog axles but it doesnt seem like it, or is it just bad luck they snapped???

Strength is not the problem, with respect. Driving styles always need to be altered to match the limits of the vehicle. I've only heard of these axles breaking when people fit massive engines and then go mad. Not that I object to that, mind

Richard been in contact with quite a few people and they agree with you, these axles are strong. I have seen hes driving style and hes good, he doesn't go mad and knows when to give it at the right moment.
I must say I haven't seen the trial where he snapped the shaft, so cant really comment. Hes managed to find a solution, a guy will machine him a new shaft for not a stupid amount of money so lets see how it turns out.
The owner has commented that he thinks he snapped the reduction hub and shaft due to the difflock, he mentions that he thinks that the range rover v8 doesn't create enough vacuum to work the difflock properly, could this be a reason???
I have no idea how this difflock works so no idea if this could be the problem. Any ideas?
Thank you
Herve

It might not be a question of the V8 not producing enough vacuum but rather does this trial machine have enough storage of vacuum or low pressure. the C300 series uses a cross member to store vacuum, ensuring enough low pressure supply.
If the trials machine does not have a storage tank perhaps that might be a consideration.

Hi again. the shaft size is 780mm from end to end. |
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I measured my spare shafts and they must be the rears as they are 595 and 855 mm - sorry i can't help
I have just converted my difflocks to air running off a ARB switches and compressor and double acting small air ram - seems to work fine in the workshop but will test next week

Rizla keep us posted on that as it might be a solution.
Anthony if I remember correctly it has a small tank for that, but not 100% I will ask him.

Rizla I'm learning here but why is this better than the vacuum mechanism?? Is it hard to make it work, or does it fail?
Manolo you have problems with the difflocks on your Unimog axles? I didn't know this.
Its cool to learn things

The vacuum is very slow for trials - with air it is far quicker

The vacuum system of the Volvo offers near instantaneous and very positive lock and unlock faster than near anything else that I have experienced. There must be a problem if it is not working correctly The Volvo is not one of those vehicles that one must drive half a mile before wondering if it is working or not.

Working with fiddle brakes there still not quick enough when your on a section - yank on the lever when there not out a bang goes a shaft.
With this air system they ( should be out ) at the touch of the button
