Me and my buddy Jake have started to overhaul his 90 Niva. This is the first vehicle that I've ever restored that has NEVER been touched by some unscrupulous "bodyman". The plan is to strip it down to (almost) nothing and sandblast everything metal, powder coat all the suspension components and spray the body with epoxy primer. The color will be a special mix of DP-90 and a bit of DP-40 to give it a matte greenish-black hue. He is a high school teacher so he's got two months off and we hope to have it finished in this time frame. This is how it's looking after three days, loaded on the trailer and ready to go for blasting.

Looking forward to this one. There's a lot to be said for being a teacher for the summer holidays alone!

I'm interested to see how this turns, out, looking at overhauling mine at some stage, (full strip down, re-spray, retrofit) so keep the pickies and updates coming.

Monday was interesting. I took the Niva back to the sandblaster to have him finish the job and I guess I ticked him off by questioning his workmanship. He told me that he would do it properly this time (for no extra charge) and to fork off and never come back! Oh well, there's plenty of blasters around and there's bound to be one who will do a proper job the first time and not give attitude. So now that it's back we have it completely stripped and ready for primer. With any luck it will be black by sun down. Here's how it's looking!

All went according to plan last night. I put on two good coats of DP-90 and Gravel Guard on the floors, wheel wells and underside. (avoiding areas that need rust repair) I'm taking the rest of the week off and going camping, so don't expect any progress till next week. Cool

OK, it's time for an update. I've got most of the patches in the floor done, I'll finish it up today so that we can get the rest of the sound deadener in place and start putting the interior back in. I mixed up the primer and sprayed the door jambs and engine bay. I was quite surprised with the results. It's more of a gunmetal/blue than the greenish black i was expecting, but it looks great, almost pearlescent!

Nice job Dean. I got absolutely no farther on mine and you're getting ready for re-assembly already.

As for the vw deal... mentioned elsewhere. The person you want to get in touch with is Alejoint. He knows quite a bit about the conversion. Haven't seen him for ages... hope everything's ok down in Venezuela.

Still plugging away! We've got the roof smoothed out, after cutting the hole for his new sunroof, and put the final coats of the 'special mix' primer on. The patch work is almost done, I just have to do the rocker panels and the body will be ready for smoothing and coating. Jake has been busy installing sound proofing and should almost be finished by quitting time today.

Not too much happening on the Lada right now. Jake is back in school and I've been side tracked. I'm busy putting siding on my house right now, after that I've got a couple other projects that must get finished before the snow flies, then it's back to the Niva. There is just never enough time.

Well I've been working on this project again, not too much to show but lots happening. We picked up an engine donor (92 VW Passat) and it's all stripped and gone to the shredder. I've got a machinist buddy working on the flywheel and bell housing, the trans, TC and diffs are in pieces and I have another huge pile of parts ready to go for powder coating.
I've built a jig to make some steel front diffs and will build one for it next week.

Mmmmmm... 135 horses!

I am planning a job like this at the aug oct 09, hope to be putting in a 1.9 TD as well. I was thinking of acid dipping mine. not sure which is better. always debate about acid gets rid off all the rust but then leaves void spaces with no protection.
but yours is looking cracking

hmmmmmm

Gah i hate those motors and im a watercooled fan... lol.

How are you planning on running that motor carb? If you carb it expect more than 135hp. Its 135 due to the terribly designed and implemented mechanical fuel injection setup. One of my vw buddies tossed some megasquirt on one last year and it definitely felt more powerful than my 2.0 aba and its built to the 9's.

If you check around on vwvortex.com you might be able to find a used reline mani for pretty cheap! would make for a reliable and powerfull vw engine.. which is not normal for canada.

Thanks for the tip 3 squared!

I spent the last couple of days building a steel front diff for this project. I'm pretty sure all those ponies would shred a stock diff!
